He nodded and opened his mouth to reply, but before he could, Miss Heather said, “I thought you said you two were together?” She sidled up to Jubilee, all four foot of her, and studied Jubilee, her brows drawn.

Jubilee looked like a mouse that had gotten caught in a trap. Panicked, and not knowing which direction to run.

It took Matt a few moments to realize what Ms. Heather said, and what she was accusing Jubilee of.

Matt wanted to laugh, but he was also curious as to what would have made Jubilee talk like that. Still, the most important thing was backing Jubilee up. No matter what she said, he was behind her.

“We are,” he said, taking the step and a half that closed the distance between Jubilee and him, as he slid his arm around her back.

To his surprise, she leaned into him, looking up at him with a smile that held more than a little bit of relief and gratefulness.

He lifted one brow at her, just for a second, and hopefully she understood that that meant that he wanted the entire story the second they got away from Miss Heather.

“I think we were just talking about maybe not making a big deal about it tonight so that we wouldn’t take the attention away from Davis and Kim. This is their evening to celebrate,” he said, hoping he was getting things right.

More relief flooded Jubilee’s face as she nodded.

“Where is that brother of yours?” Miss Heather said, not even stopping to congratulate them on their relationship. Which, he understood. She was single-minded in her determination to get Kristin married.

“Gram. Would you please?” Kristin said, putting her hand under her Gram’s elbow and tugging, looking embarrassed, as her cheeks reddened and her eyes held apologies to both Matt and Jubilee.

“If I want to see you married before I fall into my grave, I need to make sure I get it done, since you are obviously putting no effort into the situation.”

“Gram. I told you. I’m happy without a man. Not everyone needs to be married to be happy.”

Kristin tugged gently on Gram's elbow, and, with a last glance at Matt and Jubilee, Miss Heather allowed herself to be led away.

Kristin looked over her head, another apology on her face, which Matt shook his head about. He wanted to tell her not to worry about it.

Chapter 21

“Ifeel so bad for Kristinsometimes,” Jubilee said softly.

“Yeah. I think she and Luke would actually be pretty good together, but he won’t have anything to do with her Gram. She scares him.”

“That’s funny. She’s four feet tall and Luke must be six at least.”
