All I get is a chuckle in response, and that makes me even more concerned. I don’t need anyone getting ideas. I’m not staying. Absolutely not.

“So, you want to kill some time and play a few video games with me? Unless, you know, youronefriend is online instead.”

I turn to glare at Gray again, before sighing at him. “I’m actually helping your mom with—”

“Oh, don’t you worry about me. I don’t need your assistance for a couple of hours yet,” Maggie interjects, and when I blink, I let my lids remain closed for an extra second as I try not to let the pair of them sweep me off my feet.

I’ve gone from lurking in the shadows and avoiding everyone at all costs at the Reapers to receiving far more attention than I’m used to here. I was supposed to be blending in and this really doesn’t feel like it.

Shit.

“Then I’m down for a game or two.”

Gray ruffles his mom’s hair as he kisses her cheek, before waving for me to follow him. I offer Maggie a small wave as I leave, walking across the hall and falling into the same spot I had last night.

As he sets everything up, my cell vibrates with a message from Kronkz; myonefriend.

Fuck.

Swiping my thumb across the screen, I get rid of the notification as I place my cell face down on the arm of the sofa.

“Anyone exciting?” Gray asks, nodding at the device as he takes the spot beside me and hands me a controller.

I avoid his gaze as I look at the screen. “I have one friend, remember? I don’tdoexciting.”

“That’s not how I remember last night at all,” he replies, his voice growing darker as I turn to glance at him.

I swallow the lump in my throat as he watches me with hooded eyes. It’s on the tip of my tongue to beg him to give me a live-action replay, the memory so vivid in my mind my thighs clench together with need. But the moment is instantly shattered as the sound of a door slamming into a wall makes me jerk in my seat.

My senses are on alert as I struggle to breathe, coming face-to-face with Axel, as he stands next to the vibrating door with his arms folded across his chest.

Noises like that fuck with my head, encouraging me to take a trip down memory lane, so I have to bite the inside of my cheek to fight against it.

“Why can’t we find shit on you?”

The usual burning sensation of a trigger creeps up my spine. I know he’s talking to me, and I should have been more prepared for this moment, but fuck. I was too damn distracted.

“Ax, man, calm down. What’s your fucking problem?”

Gray places his arm behind me on the sofa, but I don’t lean into his hold, my body too stiff to move an inch.

“Stay out of this, Gray.” Axel walks around to stand in front of the television, his stance not changing as he glares at me.

Taking a deep breath, I try to calm my racing heart, but fail miserably. “Sorry? Am I supposed to know what you’re talking about?”

“Fuck you. I knew there was something fishy about you the second you got here,” he grunts, and his anger pisses me off, which has a weird way of grounding me in the moment. “Our tech guy ran every check possible against a Miss Scarlett Reeves and guess what he came up with? Fucking. Nothing.”

“I don’t know what you want me to say. I’ve done nothing but be honest with you since I got here, and I didn’t come here of my own accord if you recall.” I try to deflect, but it does nothing to slacken his tense jaw.

“Yeah, about everything but your fucking name.”

“I don’t know what checks you’re talking about. All the people that could confirm who I am are dead because of you, so I don’t know what you want me to do about that. Are these checks something you do to every whore you invite in?”

He takes a step toward me, hands balling into fists at my side as his nostrils flare. “No, but we don’t get every whore from the fucking Reapers, who come in here talking shit about the Devil’s Brutes,” he bites, but I just roll my eyes at him, acting way more relaxed than I actually am.

When he doesn’t proceed with more bullshit, I turn my gaze back to his as I shrug my shoulders. “I don’t know what else you want me to say.”

“What school did you go to?”
