I craned my head and found Cavis’s eyes on Lorian’s.

Lorian looked like he’d just been stabbed in his chest. “I’ve got her, brother,” he choked out. “Piperia will have a beautiful life. She will know you were a man of courage and honor.”

My eyes met Demos’s, and I glanced at the hourglass.

His blood was mine. If I couldn’t take it, he had to. Before Regner moved it.

Demos nodded, his expression tight with suppressed rage. His eyes darted, and as he attempted to find some kind of way out of this.

Cavis was shuddering now. Something warm hit my forehead. Blood. Dripping from his eyes. Because he was fighting as hard as he could.

Lorian’s dagger was in his hand. He looked at me.

No. I refused. I wouldn’t let Cavis die for me. We’d undo whatever Regner had done to him.

Lorian’s gaze turned hard. And then Cavis dragged me to the left, giving Lorian a clear shot at him. It was a movement that only took a single moment.

Lorian’s dagger was already flying. Straight toward Cavis’s head.

My scream was ripped from my lungs.

Cavis’s arm tightened around me. The ground was crumbling beneath our feet, and I stumbled. Lorian’s dagger lodged in the wall. I had one moment to meet his eyes.

He let out a roar that seemed to shake the walls around us, launching himself at me, teeth bared.

Cavis pulled me to him. And then we were falling through the air.

THE END
