Her throat worked as she swallowed hard.

“Got it?”

Her eyes moved to his mouth as she licked her top lip. “Yeah. I got it, Garrick. I understand.”

He released her chin, diving his hand into her thick, wavy hair and pulling her head back even further as he captured her mouth beneath his. Having her pressed up against his body made the ache for her even more intense, but he wouldn’t act on it. Not yet. She wasn’t ready for that, but she would be and soon.

When he broke the kiss, he locked eyes with her.

“Good. That’s a good girl.” He released her hair. “I have to make a few calls. Bastian should be home soon. Has your aunt gotten in touch with you about rescheduling the meeting?” He asked, completely switching subjects on her.

She blinked a few times before finally answering him.

“No. Not a word.” She wiped her thumb across her bottom lip.

He stared at her a long moment, unsure if she was giving him the truth or not.

“I’ll let you know as soon as she does,” she said, more convincingly. “If you’re going to be busy, I think I’ll just go into the kitchen and get something to eat.” She smiled gently and sauntered from the room.

The girl was up to no good.

He was sure of it.

CHAPTER14

Ariella

* * *

A crisp windblew across the street, seeping in through the thin lining of Ariella’s jacket as she stood outside The café. It was a cute coffee house in the center of the downtown shopping area where she was finally going to have the meeting with Ares Morgan.

Aunt Ursa had texted her the new location and time minutes after she’d settled down in the kitchen with the ham and Swiss sandwich Mrs. Antoinette had made for her. Bastian wasn’t back from wherever he had gone off to, and Garrick had hurried through the kitchen to grab his keys muttering something about an order at the club he needed to deal with.

She wasn’t going to get in the way of his work. It was a simple meeting. Ten minutes top, and in a very public setting. There was no reason why she should be frightened. Except for all the warnings Garrick gave her about staying away from Ares, but he had his own agenda. Whatever issue he had with Ares was between them. All she had to do was give Ares the envelope Aunt Ursa had given her and get the samples from him. Simple.

She pressed her hand to her stomach, wishing it was enough to calm the butterflies having a party in her stomach. Checking her phone for the time, she frowned.

A text message from Bastian.

Where’d you go?

She bit down on her lip, wondering if she should answer him. She’d already turned off her location so he couldn’t track her and ruin everything, but she wasn’t sure if he would be able to find her just by a response. The man had been able to find her countless times before with less information.

“Ariella?” A man wearing a dark coat with the collar turned up and a black knit cap stood in front of her.

She slipped her phone back into the pocket of her jacket.

“Yes.” She said, palming the envelope in her pocket. “You are?”

He tilted his head up, giving her a better look at his face. Stark blue eyes contrasting the jet-black hair peeking out from his cap. The scar on the left side of his cheek running from his ear to his nose told her everything.

“Ares.” She breathed out his name, glad to finally get this entire ordeal over with.

“Yes.” His thick lips seemed to be permanently fixed in a frown. He glanced down the street behind her and then over his shoulder, as though checking if they were being watched.

“Do you want to go inside and get some coffee? It’s cold today.” She fisted the envelope in her right pocket, while her phone was buzzing in her left hand, still hiding in her pocket.

He checked the window of the cafe. It was filled with customers, but they would be able to find a seat. He stopped his survey and his eyebrows shot up. The color drained from his cheeks, which had been rosy thanks to the chill in the air.
