“As am I, little human.”

“If we seal the bond, I won’t really be human anymore.”

“Regardless, you will be mine.” His lips brushed the top of my head.

“Why are you so certain of that?” I asked him. “What do you even see in me?”

He was silent for a moment.

Part of me cringed, waiting for him to admit that he saw nothing, or just some potential.

Instead, he said, “I see many things when I look at you, Nissa. The one that truly stands out ishope. You make my world look brighter, and I need that.”

I grew quiet as those words set in.

“What do you see in me?” he asked.

“Physical strength, mental strength, emotional strength… you have everything. When I think about the person I want to spend my life with, I think about someone I can lay in bed and talk about books with, and someone strong enough to protect me, if anyone else ever comes after me for my magic. Someone who will hold me when I need it and push me when I need that too. At this point, it doesn’t even work when I try to picture anyone else but you in that place.”

“Good. I’d hate to have to behead one of my warriors just because you pictured him as your mate.”

I laughed again. “You wouldn’t really.”

“Perhaps not. I’d want to, though.”

“That’s fair.” I closed my eyes, taking in a deep breath of his scent. My body was completely and entirely relaxed, and I was getting a little sleepy.

“You should rest. I kept you up late last night, and you’re still fragile.”

“I’m not fragile; I’m thicker than most of your fae,” I mumbled back.

“In the best places.” He slid his hand down and gave my ass a possessive squeeze. “But it will take more time than this to recover from those years of starvation.”

“Unless you convince me to drink more of your blood.” My words grew softer as he started stroking my back again.

“I thought I’d have to work up to that.”

My lips curved upward. “It was fun. You should try drinking mine too, sometime.”

“Definitely thought I’d have to work up tothat,” he said, chest rumbling a bit.

“We’ll figure it out later.”

He made a noise of agreement and continued to rub my back as I drifted off.

Chapter23

Nissa

Kierden woke me up an hour or two later. His expression was so solemn that I didn’t need to ask whether the male fae had come back from Dirue’s house with news.

Both of us were silent as he pulled his shorts on and I adjusted my dress. He took my hand, slipping his fingers between mine while he opened the door.

Eisley and a few of the fae I’d met earlier stood outside with their bonded esu, including the man who had gone to talk to Dirue.

Their expressions were all grave.

“What happened?” Kierden’s voice was low, but not angry.
