Not at all interested in snuggling with the big old bastard, I curled up on the ground.

“The shifters could hunt you down if you’re not in the shelter,”Bright said into my mind.“You’ll need to sleep next to the king.”

“That shelter is tiny,”I protested.

“It takes a great amount of magic to keep a small shelter up while a fae sleeps. The king is sacrificing to protect you, even if it doesn’t seem like it.”

Oh.

“Can’t the shifters still smell us, though? Or just follow the trail of my plants?”

“Yes. But when they see me and Deathjaws beside the king’s shelter, they will leave. Getting past two esu and through thick ice walls would be no small feat, even for a pack of wolves.”

So it was about intimidation on top of physical protection.

Which meant I was going to have to climb into that tiny shelter with Kierden.

I heaved a sigh, then stood up slowly and made my way over on reluctant legs.

The king was taking up the entire space, which meant I was going to have to literally lay on him.

Thanks to all my years in the tower, I had never shared a bed with anyone. Or kissed anyone. Or done anything else resembling sex. I’d read a bunch of books about it though, and overheard a long discussion about it between two adults when I was fifteen, so I had a basic understanding of how everything worked.

I’d tested some things on myself to make sure my body functioned, too. Everyone got lusty when an eclipse happened, so after I’d matured, I had the option of dealing with it or just waiting for the desire to fade. There had been a clear winner.

But that didn’t make it any less intimidating to face the fact that I was going to have to literally climb on top of a king.

I walked up to the shelter and peered inside.

Yeah.

Wow.

Not much room.

A sigh escaped me.

The king gave me an annoyed growl but said nothing.

Part of me itched to warn him that I would figure out a way to literally rip him apart with my vines if he trapped me inside it alone again. For obvious reasons, I didn’t do well with the thought of being imprisoned again.

But Kierden didn’t seem to have realized the purpose of my tower, so I wasn’t going to bring it up.

I bit my lip to hide my cringe as I climbed right in on top of the king. My dress tangled around my calves, and I knew I probably smelled terrible, but I ignored those things.

His chest felt insanely good beneath my hands.

I blamed that on the bond.

He gave me a dark look while I tried to get comfortable on top of him, and my cringe grew apologetic. “Sorry.”

He muttered something I didn’t understand, and I decided not to ask him about it as I finally collapsed on his chest. He was significantly bigger than me, so my forehead nestled against his neck.

“If you’re an assassin, I’ll make your end incredibly painful,” he grumbled to me.

“If I’m an assassin, someone forgot to train me,” I mumbled back against his throat. The brush of my lips on his skin made me shiver a little, and one of his hands landed on my lower back.

My toes curled, and I fought hard to ignore the warmth blossoming in my chest.
