Page 17 of Dark & Beastly Fae

Then, that relief morphed into suspicion.

I knew she couldn’t have been his mate, because Bright told me fae didn’t take mates. And because of the bond between us, obviously.

But what if she was his lover? No one had told me whether or not fae took companions of the other sex without starting mate bonds.

She and Kierden looked nothing alike. Where he was tan with dark, wavy hair, she was pale with straight white-blonde hair that had streaks of vibrant blue throughout it, matching the electric blue that glowed in her eyes.

“You are afool, Kier,” the woman finally said, looking away from me and back at the king. “An utter fool. How could you think this was a good idea? Do you know how many brawls I had to fight to keep the damned Vuuths from tearing our city to shreds?”

“This was theonlyidea. You know it wasn’t mine.” He disappeared into the closet. “And I’m sure you enjoyed the brawls.”

She followed him. Between the nickname and following him in while he got dressed?

Yeah, definitely his lover.

They didn’t close the door behind them, so I could see the large gap between them as Kierden faced away from her. He pulled on a pair of tight, small shorts that must’ve been his undergarments, followed by longer shorts like the ones he’d been wearing since we met.

“My enjoyment doesn’t matter because those brawls were unnecessary, and a risk to the peace. I—veil, what is on your hand?” She grabbed his wrist as he started to step past her, and there was a long moment’s pause before she released it. “Damn. You really are mated.”

“Temporarily.”

She dragged a hand through the top of her smooth, straight hair. Since she was facing me then, I saw her expression grow considerate. At least until she wrinkled her nose while glancing at me. “You’ll need to wash his scent off your skin, along with all that filth. You reek.”

I blinked.

Was she talking to me?

She had to be talking to me, right? She hadn’t even acknowledged me earlier though, so I was having a hard time believing it.

“She speaks, right?” the fae woman glanced at Kierden.

“Yes, Eisley.” He pronounced her nameeyes-lee. “I already told her to bathe. She didn’t listen.” The king wound some fabric around his hand, then tied it into place with his teeth. It covered his palm entirely, blocking the glow of our bond and the brand on the back of his hand.

“What’s her name?”

My face heated at the way they were talking about me.

“I haven’t asked.” With that he strode out of the room, abandoning me to the mercy of his lover. Death followed him out, walking confidently at the king’s side.

What a damn asshole.

Nissa

The door shut behind them, and Eisley looked at me again. “He didn’t even ask for your name? You were traveling for six or seven days, right?”

“Eight,” I admitted. “And no, he didn’t.”

She scoffed. “Bastard.”

At least we’d found something to agree on. That would ease the awkwardness of the mate-vs-lover thing. Considering the size of her muscles and the fact that she was a fae, I didnotwant to start a fight with her.

An ache bloomed in my wrist where the glowing handprint was, and I rubbed it absently.

“So, what’s your name? You really do have to take a bath, by the way. I don’t know how humans are about cleanliness, but you stink badly. And right now, wearing a male’s scent on your skin when it’s not the eclipse will get you gutted around here.”

“I’m Nissa,” I said. “I’d rather the king not know my name until he’s asked me himself.”
