“Are you alright?”Bright asked me. She was sitting beside the pool, drying off.

“I don’t know. The handprint on my wrist feels like someone’s stabbing a knife into it.”

She gave a low growl.“I’ll find the king.”

“You don’t need to—”I cut myself off as the door shut behind her, leaving me entirely alone.

I leaned the back of my head against the hard stone of the bathing pool and stared up at the wood ceiling.

The pain was bad enough to cloud my mind, and I focused on breathing as I waited for it to abate.

In.

Out.

In.

Out.

I didn’t know how much time passed. Five minutes, maybe ten?

The doors to Kierden’s room finally opened again, and Eisley came walking back through. She had a bundle of fabric tossed over her arm, and her angry-looking bonded esu at her side.

She frowned when she saw me. “Are you okay?”

I let out a slow breath, not sure I could speak through the pain.

After another minute passed I managed to say, “The handprint is causing me pain.”

Her forehead furrowed and she glanced at her esu. He gave me a long glower before slinking away, and she patted his back as he left.

“We’ll get Kier back in here.”

I closed my eyes. “Sounds like a good way to make him angry.”

She laughed. “He’s usually angry. It’s a requirement when you’re a violent fae warrior who’s been leading others into battles for hundreds of years. The anger keeps all the other shitty emotions at bay.”

I supposed that was decent logic.

Choose anger, and you wouldn’t have to acknowledge whatever else you were feeling.

“Sounds like a good way to make yourself miserable,” I murmured.

She grinned. “Yup. Come on; let’s get you dressed and moving, in case Kier ignores Sharp and we have to hunt him down.”

“Sharp?”

“My bonded esu. Sharpclaws. I asked him to try to drag my brother back.”

Ohhh.

“Bright went too,” I admitted as I eased myself carefully out of the pool. Though I tried not to put pressure on my hand, I mostly failed. “She’s my bonded esu, I guess. I’m still trying to wrap my mind around everything.”

Eisley looked at my bare body with a deep frown. My face warmed as I quickly wrapped myself in the towel and attempted to wring my hair out with one of the flaps of it.

“Everyone knows Bright,” she said.

“Really? Why?”
