“She wanted her own room. I said no. This was her revenge.”

He chuffed, showing his amusement.“I like her.”

“I noticed.”

“You know how I feel about fae not taking mates. Perhaps you should reconsider your stance.”He settled his head on top of his paws.

“You find it unnatural,”I agreed.“And yet you lack a mate of your own.”

“I’ve pursued Brightfangs multiple times, as you know. I only lack a mate because I have yet to persuade her to see things as they really are.”

“And how are things really?”

“She belongs at my side, as I belong at hers. Our souls were meant to be one. The fact that our bonded companions are in the same position is merely a push from someone on the other side of the veil.”

Death rarely waxed romantic, but when he did, he did it fiercely.

“So you want me to believe that my human and I are merely side characters in your love story?”I asked.

“Of course. And the fact that you just called her yours only emphasizes my point.”

“I know. It’s a problem I haven’t gotten under control yet.”

“Technically, the marking on both of you does declare her yours. So you’re not wrong.”

I let out a long breath.“You are terrible backup, my friend.”

“As are you.”He adjusted the position of his head.“Figure out a way to tell Brightfangs that she’s meant to be mine without angering her. She still refuses to believe me when I say it.”

“You’d be better off convincing her human.”

“I intend to.”

Off in my human’s corner, I heard a cute, frustrated huffing noise.

She cleared her throat and said, “I’m not sure if you’re aware, Kierden, but Death is trying to convince Bright that you want me in your bed.”

I jerked my gaze back to the esu.

He batted his eyes, completely unrepentant.

“Death wants Bright in the bed and has resorted to underhanded methods to make it happen, then,” I said.

Death stared at me for a moment before letting out a huff.

There was a long pause before my human finally said, “Oh.”

She stood slowly, still wearing the same orange dress she’d had on earlier. Most female fae slept in their scanties, but I wasn’t about to ask her to strip. The last thing I needed was more temptation where she was concerned.

She crossed the room, sat down on the edge of the bed, and gave Death a quick smile. “Can I talk to Kierden for a second?”

He pretended to consider it. Finally, he licked her on the nose and slipped past her, heading straight for Bright. The female esu made a noise of amusement as he plopped down beside her.

My human leaned closer and whispered, “We could share the bed for their sake. Bright insists she’s not interested in him as a mate, but it sounds like she’s been alone for a long time, so it could be a good thing.”

I murmured back, “They can both hear you from here.”

Her head whipped around, and her cheeks blushed a gorgeous crimson color that made me itch to run my fingers over them. I ignored the itch.
