Kaelle shivered. “I can already imagine the look of utter shame and disappointment on Vayme’s face.”

Laeli snorted. “Veil, not a chance. Barely-contained lust, sure.”

“He isn’t attracted to me,” Kaelle said.

“Of course he is. You’ll see.”

They both looked at me to see my reaction.

I was still grimacing, trying hard to think my way out of the situation I’d just landed myself in.

There was no way, other than refusing to wear the outfit. And Eisley would literally wrestle me into it if I refused when she was that excited.

“Hello?” Eisley waved a hand at me.

I wordlessly lifted my short orange dress to my breasts and pointed to my ribs.

All of the girls went silent.

“You haven’t gained much weight yet?” Eisley frowned, deeply.

“Kierden doesn’t know the truth about the tower. I’m pretty sure he thinks it was to protect me because of my magic. If I suggest an extra meal, he’ll make jokes about it or ask questions. And he’s never seen me naked, so…” I shrugged helplessly, letting my dress fall back into place.

Death prowled over to me, his chest rumbling with a warning growl. He brushed the hem of my dress with his nose, and I sighed, lifting it.

He bumped my ribs, asking for an explanation without using words.

“I was starving,” I told him. “For a really long time.”

His eyes widened with what was clearly horror.

“Don’t tell him. I didn’t want him to know.” I dropped my dress again.

With a low, angry rumble, he stepped up closer and leaned against me. It was the closest thing he could offer to a hug, and I reluctantly wrapped my arms around him. His chest was still rumbling with unhappiness as I did.

“We can just fight in our normal dresses,” Kaelle said. “Kier doesn’t need to know.”

“Actually, I think this would be the perfect opportunity to show him how much of an asshole he is,” Laeli said, a wicked glint in her eyes. “All of his people will be able to see how humans look when we’re being fed properly—even if we aren’t quite there yet. Everyone will know that Kier hasn’t been feeding you enough.”

Well, when she put it like that, it sounded downright vicious.

And… I kind of loved it.

Eisley’s forehead wrinkled with alarm.

Kaelle moved between her and the door, blocking her path out. Eisley probably could’ve killed the small blue-haired human with her little finger alone, but she wouldn’t. We all knew that.

“Fighting in your dresses is agreatidea,” Eisley said quickly.

Laeli looked at me, and I nodded.

She plucked the metal outfits out of the fae woman’s hands, and Eisley sighed. “He’s going to kill me.”

Laeli snorted. “In your dreams, maybe.” She handed me and Kaelle our outfits.

I released Death, but he just snuggled up closer to me. The poor guy probably felt bad. I didn’t blame him for not knowing; if he had, he would’ve made Kierden do something about it a long time ago.

When I started changing, Death gave me space. He went back to Bright and sat down next to her. The way her eyes narrowed told me he was talking to her, possibly saying something she didn’t like.
