Some part of me wondered if I was really going to die before Kierden even learned my name.

Chapter11

Kierden

The blood pounding in my ears and the fear burning my lungs were unlike anything I’d ever felt before. There was a record of every battle I’d ever fought on my arm, in ink, and yet I had never been afraid of a loss the way I was in the moment the Beast appeared beside my mate.

My concern had nothing to do with my life, andeverythingto do with hers.

Death was snarling in my mind, him and the rest of our bonded animals already ramming the gate to the cage, trying to get through.

But it was made of gargoyle steel. When locked from the inside it was impenetrable, created to protect its occupants during the vulnerable moments of their fight.

The other kings and I charged the door. For once, we were preparing to fight together instead of against one another.

“He’s here for you,” Vayme snarled, as we ran. “You need to go.”

“I won’t leave her,” I snarled back.

“Then we fight.”

“We can’t break it,”Death growled to everyone as we reached the door, finding the animals’ sides bloody and their chests heaving. Eisley and a few of the other kings’ allies were there too, each of them holding weapons.“Tell your females to get it open.”

I gave the command to my human as I lunged for the walls of the room, gripping the bars while I tried to see into the cage.

She didn’t respond, and I couldn’t see through the other humans’ magic.

Ravv’s female was burning brightly enough to take up half the space. Vayme’s female had her wind blowing so fiercely that it worked with the fire to conceal everything.

Veil, I hoped she wasn’t on fire or in the arms of the Beast. He would play with his food before consuming my magic, and there was no better way to break the mind of a male than to torture his female.

“Come on, little human,”I demanded.“Open the door.”

Still, I received no response.

A small form ran through the wind and fire. A moment later, the little human with blue hair burst through it. Vayme caught her in his arms, and hugged her fiercely.

“Nissa told him she was bonded to you, and he bit her. He’s drinking her blood,” the girl said, lifting her watering eyes to mine. “We didn’t know he was a vampire. I didn’t know. I should’ve warned everyone.”

Her wind blew more fiercely, and the cage started to rattle around us.

Nissa.

My human.

She was talking about my mate.

“Laeli’s on fire,” Vayme’s human added, her voice starting to shake as the wind grew even fiercer. “She can’t stop it. I—”

We couldn’t fight in that wind. Not against the Beast.

“Get her out of here. Go to the elves,” I said to Vayme, my voice cold as the calm of battle began to seep into my mind, body, and blood. “Tell them if their assassins kill any of our people, includingour mates, we will consider it an act of war and will come for them as one.”

Our magic wasn’t as strong as theirs, but they were soft. They didn’t know how to fight.

And we were weapons, down to our very souls.

Together, no group of creatures could stand against us.
