“Do you think they use poison?”

“They must, though I haven’t figured out what kind, or how they use it. Even when I watch them cook for themselves and no one else knows about their bond, they always end up dead.”

If he’d seen that many couples die because of a mate bond, I had to think he was probably afraid for our lives because of ours. And that kind of fear would change a person; I knew, because I’d looked it in the face when I was alone, starving, and locked in that damn tower.

“So you were an ass to me to protect me,” I said.

“Yes.”

“That’s a shitty way to protect someone, Kierden.” I closed my eyes, but my lips curved upward just slightly with his low chuckle. The rumble of it against my bare breasts felt incredible.

“I know. It won’t happen again.”

I bit my lip. “It might have to, though. If anyone finds out we’re together…”

“I had to tell my people about the bond. There was no way around it. As far as they know, we have no feelings for each other and plan to separate when the eclipse comes. No one is killed over silver bonds, only golden ones.”

Damn.

“Dowe have feelings for each other?” I asked, after a long moment.

He didn’t answer immediately, so I waited.

Kierden finally said, “I suppose we’re still figuring that out.” He added, “Don’t think I didn’t notice you avoid telling me about your town.”

Damn.

“Can we talk about it tomorrow? Or after I sleep? I don’t know what time it is, but I’m too exhausted for that conversation.”

“I suppose. Let me clean you and get you to bed, little human.”

“I need something to sleep in,” I mumbled to him, as he started slowly washing my back with soap and water. “I’m tired of sleeping in my dresses.”

“Most fae sleep in their scanties.”

My eyes closed at the blissful peace of him touching me like that. “Too uncomfortable.”

He considered it as he continued washing the wound where my shoulder met my neck very carefully. It didn’t hurt as much as I had expected it to. “I have a few old shirts. I haven’t worn them in a long, long time, but they might work.”

“That sounds nice.”

He chuckled. “You are absolutely stunning.”

My lips curved upward. “Ears and all?”

“Mmhm.” He licked the curve of my ear again, making me laugh softly.

When he was done washing me, he dried me off and then carried me to the closet.

He pulled a shirt out of the back of his closet, then set me down on my feet just long enough to dry my hair with a towel and tug the shirt into place. The fabric was loose and soft, exactly what I’d wanted. It barely fell to the middle of my thighs, but I didn’t mind showing skin thanks to the dresses I’d been wearing.

“You’re going to need to drink more of my blood before you go to sleep,” he told me as he set me down again in the bathroom. I was only on my feet long enough for him to get out a bandage, wet my skin, and then cover the puncture wounds on my neck with it.

“Am I? I feel fine.”

“It’s supposed to help you heal faster. Unless you’d rather eat?”

I made a face. “I don’t think I can choke anything down.”
