Before I could tell her she was wrong, the woman sitting beside me set her hand on mine. I jerked toward the woman with a growl as I ripped my hand away.

“Did you find any evidence, Kier?” Tal asked me, batting her eyelashes.

“Not yet.” My annoyance flared.

“I would be willing to mate with you. If someone has to make the sacrifice, I’ll do it.”

“I have a mate,” I growled back at her, the response so immediate and harsh that she leaned away from me, her eyes flooded with surprise.

“She’s nothing more than a shield,” Tal said. “You’re a warrior, and you deserve to be mated to one too.”

I didn’t want a veil-damned warrior—I wanted my human.

I couldn’t say that, though.

“I’ll mate with whomever I choose should the necessity arrive. That is none of your concern, as you damn well know,” I told her bluntly, turning away from her.

When I looked back at Nissa, I found her chair empty.

Bright was gone too.

“They left,”Death told me.

“Clearly,”I growled back.“Where did they go?”

“I don’t know. Your female looked upset, and Bright told me she’d flay me if I followed her.”

“You’d be thrilled if she flayed you.”Iabandoned the glass of human ale and strode toward the door as I reached out for my human’s mind.

I’d find her—and I’d get the answers I wanted from her.

My lips curved upward wickedly as I considered the many ways I could do exactly that.

Chapter17

Nissa

Islammed the door behind me and collapsed against the wood, breathing fast. The ale was not sitting well in my stomach—not well at all. I’d only had a few sips, and all it had managed to do was make me feel dizzy and flushed, which was miserable.

And then Kierden had shown up and made me feel all strange, and thatwomanhad touched his hand…

I shuddered.

I’d never wanted to physically hurt anyone before. That really wasn’t my personality. Sure, I had hoped my town would be burned down on many occasions, but I’d never actually wanted to do the burning myself.

And yet, I wanted to wrap my hands around that woman’s neck and squeeze until the life had drained out of her.

Veil, what had possessed me?

Despite my horror at my own reactions, something inside me was still repeating:

He’s mine.

He’s mine.

He’s mine.

“Veil,” I groaned, squeezing my eyes shut and hoping Kierden couldn’t hear those damn thoughts.
