I squeezed my eyes shut. “I tried to escape every time I could, and I never forgot what my father said to me. I amnota curse. My magic is a part of me, but it’s only one part. I knew you thought you were abducting me when you showed up in my tower, but you saved me. You saved my life.”

“You would’ve figured out a way to save yourself eventually,” he told me, his voice low and edged with fury.

That fury wasn’t geared toward me, but to the people who had used me for so long.

“Maybe.”

Even as I said the word, I knew it was a lie.

The only way out for me on my own would’ve been death.

“Tell me about your attempts at escape,” he said.

He cared about what had happened to me.

He cared aboutme.

So I opened my mouth, and I told him.

With every story I told and every one he told me, I felt closer to him. By the time I fell asleep, I wondered if it was possible for a single conversation to change a person’s life… because it felt like that one had changed mine entirely.

Chapter19

Nissa

Iwoke with a gentle hand on my arm and a warm kiss to my cheek. Soft orange light streamed in from the windows I’d left open the night before, bathing my skin and the blankets around us.

“I have to go back to the castle to continue my search for the murderer,” Kierden murmured.

Goosebumps broke out on my skin at the sultry tone to his voice. “Okay.”

The words to seal the mating bond slipped into my mind again.

“Sillah ovim rett warum.”

I ignored them.

He stroked my arm lightly. “Come to the castle for breakfast, and let me know when you’re there. We’ll meet for your other four meals as well.”

“I think three meals is enough now. I haven’t been as hungry.”

“Four, then.”

“Fine.” I gave him a dramatic sigh.

The words repeated themselves in my mind again—

“Sillah ovim rett warum.”

The urge to say them was getting stronger, but I could still fight it.

Kierden leaned over and captured my lips before reluctantly getting out of bed, oblivious to the way the bond pushed at my mind.

I watched him closely, my body warming as he moved. Noticing me watching him, he dragged a hand over his erection for me.

I bit my lip to fight a grin, and bit it harder when he gave me a gorgeous smirk.

Kierden pulled a clean pair of shorts from his bag and tugged them on before heading out. He stopped in the doorway to look back at me for a long moment before saying, “Stay safe, and let me know what you’re up to so I don’t worry.”
