To his credit, he stopped immediately.

My chest rose and fell too rapidly—I was feeling too out of control.

“You don’t get to make me climax just to make a statement. If you touch me, it’s because you want to make me feel good.”I caught his wrist and tugged it away, so his fingers slid out of me. Though I winced at the loss of him, it was the right call.

“Of course I want to make you feel good,”he growled back at me.“A man can have more than one motive.”

“Not if one of them is proving a point.”I tried to slide off his lap, but he held me firmly in place.

“I am not human, nor will I ever be. I will always feel a drive to dominate and conquer. As the king, that drive becomes a visceral need. You are either willing to accept that part of me, or you aren’t. The time to decide that is now.”

When I tried to climb off him again, he released me, though he did so with great reluctance. As I reached for my scanties, he did too—pulling them up my thighs and then smoothing them, making sure they covered me.

The gesture was confusingly sweet after our little argument.

My stomach growled as I stood, and Kierden rose to his feet with me. He took my hand again to steady me as I climbed out.

“I’ll train for an hour or two while I wait for my fae to return with news about Dirue. Eat something and think about it.”His voice was gentle again.

Something told me he already felt confident that I was going to accept hisdrive to dominate and conquer.

“Tell me as soon as you hear something. I want to be there for all of it,”I warned him.

He agreed, and I believed him.

I tugged my dress over my wet skin and walked to the dining hall on shaky legs, wondering what I had been thinking when I decided to develop feelings for a fae king.

Eisley was sitting at a small table in the corner of the dining hall when I got there, both of us completely alone for once.

She grinned at me when I sat down across from her. “Hey.”

“Hi.” I gave her a small smile of my own. “Back from your secret mission?”

She winked at me. “I’ll never tell.”

My smile grew slightly more genuine.

“You look stressed,” she remarked.

“Confused, mostly.”

She waited.

I sighed.

“Come on, Nissa. I need the distraction.” Her words were slightly playful, but the sadness in her eyes told me they were genuine. I had a feeling she was still struggling with the loss of the couple that had died; they had been her friends.

And the fact that her words mirrored Kierden’s didn’t pass my notice. I felt a little bad for leaving him when he was struggling, but he had upset me. I couldn’t just ignore that, or the man would start to think he could make all the calls about everything.

I looked around.

There were only a few other people in the room, and they were far enough away that they wouldn’t hear me as long as I didn’t raise my voice.

“Kierden told me he feels a drive to dominate and conquer,” I said quietly.

She made a face. “Donotgive me details.”

“Sorry,” I replied quickly.
