“I know that we’re fated. I can feel it in my chest, my magic, and my very soul.”

His words made something within me settle a little.

We both grew quiet, other than Kierden’s soft groans and murmurs of how good my hands felt on his skin. I wasn’t really thinking about anything, just focused on trying to make him feel good.

After a little time had gone by, he said in a voice so low I could barely make out the words, “I dread what this night will hold, Nissa.”

“Do you want to talk about it?”

There was a long pause.

I assumed he was going to say no.

Instead, he admitted quietly, “It’s my duty to kill her for what she’s done. Though she deserves to die for her actions…”

“She’s your friend,” I said quietly.

“She’s my friend,” he repeated, his words slower and heavier than mine.

“Did you have sex with her?” I asked him. If he had, I wouldn’t be jealous; it would’ve been a long time ago, and I only wanted to know so I could be aware of whether it was a factor or not.

“No. We have never been attracted to one another.”

“But she’s still your friend.”

“Indeed.” He leaned his head forward for me, and I slid my hands back to the base of his neck, earning a low, rumbly groan.

“I’m sorry,” I said softly. “If there was a way for me to make it easier for you, I would do it.”

“Thank you.” He lifted a hand to rest on my knee. The gesture wasn’t sexual; it was one of gratitude, and companionship.

“Is it lonely to be the king? I know you have Eisley, but she’s your little sister, and I’ve never seen you vulnerable with her.”

“Eisley is the only person I trust entirely when it comes to the kingdom, but you’re right. I don’t share my emotions or my burdens with anyone, and it has been lonely. Until now, I suppose.”

“Does sharing them feel like ripping your nails off?” I teased him gently.

He chuckled. “Surprisingly, no. It feels like a weight is being lifted off my shoulders. Then again, that could just be those pretty little fingers.”

I laughed. “Still flirting with me, huh?”

“As I will be until the bitter end, little human.” He squeezed my knee. “We should talk about what happened at the pool earlier.”

“Alright. Want me to stop touching you?”

“Never.” His answer was quick, and firm. “But if your hands are getting sore, I’d rather you stop.”

“I’m alright.” They were a little tired, but in a good way. I loved the way he was reacting to my touch, and the way his muscles felt beneath my palms, so I had no desire to let go. “I can accept your need todominateandconquer, but if something makes me uncomfortable, I have to be able to draw a line. And I’m not comfortable with you using me to make a statement to your people. If your drive for those things is too strong to accept that, this will never work between us. I’m not an object to be used.”

“I know you aren’t, and I’m sorry. I like to be in control, but I can only enjoy it if it brings you pleasure too. It wasn’t my intention to make you feel like I cared more about the statement I was making than about pleasing you; my focus was on you, not my warriors.”

I nodded. “I get it. And the dominating and conquering thing doesn’t surprise me, or scare me away. If it gets you off to touch me in random places, I’m not against it, as long as no one actually sees anything and it’s about us having fun.”

“I can agree with that.” There was a gorgeous, growl to his voice that I loved. “Despite my poor reaction, that was among one of the most pleasurable moments of my life.”

My body warmed a little. He hadn’t even climaxed. “Mine too,” I admitted. “I have to admit, I’m curious how we could possibly have sex in the dining room.”

He chuckled. “I suppose you’ll have to wait and see.”
