I laugh, which causes her to smile.

“Somehow I don’t doubt that,” I say, catching my breath. “So you practically grew up amongst weapons.”

“They’re as natural to me as magic is to you.” She chuckles. “Don’t get me wrong, I certainly can’t fight, but I like to imagine I have a better grasp on this than the average human.”

“Do not underestimate yourself, Aurora.”

“Zalith… Call me Rory.”

I pause, turning away as I smile.

“Very well, Rory.”

She returns the gesture, her demeanor softening.

“Come on then, let's have a sparring match.”

“So soon?” she asks.

“What’s the matter, Rory?” I chuckle teasingly. “Let’s do this.”

She raises her sword as I brace myself for her attack. I do so with only a moment to spare because she springs forth with an assault so strong I almost lose balance. She goes for a swing which I deflect, causing her weapon to fall to the ground.

Rory stumbles forward as this happens but I react too late, my sword also falling from my grip as we both fall to the soft ground. In the turmoil, I end up on top of her, my lower body pressed between her legs.

She looks up at me, our hot breaths landing on each other’s faces. A rush of blood floods my head as my eyes dart to her lips. She does the same, the heat rising in the room as I’m filled with the urge to take her there and then.

From the look on her face, she’s just as enticed by me as I am by her. Magnetically, our lips move to meet each other’s, but before they can, there comes a sudden voice from the entrance.

I kneel up, turning around to see a panicked Slyth standing in the doorway.

“I apologize for interrupting sir, but Vippera is searching for you, and by the gods, she is on a warpath.”

“Shit…”

“What’s going on?” asks Rory.

I help her to her feet. My arousal is replaced with the urge to get her to safety. Gods know what Vippera will do if she finds Rory here. I’m only thankful she’s not the one who stumbled in on us.

“Vippera is coming, we need to get you out of here,” I tell her before turning to Slyth. “Take her back to her private quarters but slip out the rear doors. Keep an eye out and do so as quietly and quickly as you can.”

“Zalith!” exclaims Rory.

“I’m sorry, Rory, but this is an emergency. Go, now!”

She’s whisked away out of sight as I put away the weapons and tidy myself off. The comedown from the arousal causes a wave of exhaustion to wash over my body.

That was too close…

Sighing, I push through the main doors of the manor, stepping back into the gardens. What greets me is a hellacious sight in the form of Vippera, standing there like a predator with her eyes locked in on her prey.

“Just where the hell were you?” she demands, her voice as ear-piercing as ever.

“Why do you care?” I snarl. By now, I’ve had more than enough of her constant questions.

“Wait a minute…” she mutters, her nose twitching. “You were with a mistress, weren’t you?”

“I don’t have time for this.” I sigh, walking past her. She spins around on her heels and marches by my side.
