"So this is the infamous boyfriend?"

“Yes. Dylan, this is Austin.”

“Oh, I know who he is,” Dylan replied.

What the hell was happening?

Brent was behind Dylan, wide-eyed, staring at me, but I didn’t know what his expression meant. I shifted uncomfortably in my seat.

“I think you should leave, right now,” Austin said.

And the way they looked at each other made it clear that this wasn’t the first time they’d met.

“I didn’t see you come in, or I’d have left then. Fortunately, I already finished my dinner, or I’d have lost my appetite by now,” Dylan said, his voice so tight and deep it was like he hated the man.

“Dylan!” I said in surprise.

Before Austin could explode, I quickly stood up.

"Okay, I think we're done here," I said, turning to Dylan. "I really do think you should go.”

Dylan finally broke his stare down with Austin to look at me. His face softened when he saw my flustered expression.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt your…date.”

His gaze burned into me before he turned on his heels and left.

What the hell was going on between them? I was sure it wasn’t just some sort of jealousy on Dylan’s part, because Austin was clearly seething as he watched Dylan stomp away.

“What was that all about?” I demanded.

Austin sighed. “I’ll explain, but can we finish our dinner first and talk later?” he asked.

I didn’t have much of an appetite left, but I waited to ask any more questions.

Once we were back at my house, I let him sit on the couch while I stood, arms crossed. “Are you going to explain what that was all about?”

“I was about to tell you when he showed up. The reason I’ve been acting a little strange since he dropped you off . . . Dylan used to be my brother-in-law. And seeing you with him? I don’t know. It did something to me.”

Brother-in-law?My jaw dropped as I processed this information. Austin was the brother of Dylan's ex-wife. What were the chances...

“He was married to your sister? Your sister is hisex?” I said, knowing I sounded dumb and repetitive but unable to help it.

“Yep,” he said.

“Wait, were you your sister’s lawyer? Because he said her lawyer raked him through the coals.”

Could Austin have been the one to make Dylan so miserable?

“I advised her and sort of off-the-record consulted with her lawyer, but no, I wasn’t in charge. Being the brother and brother-in-law made it a conflict for me. Not a good look, or I’d have represented her, of course.” He threw his arm up on the back of the couch. “What’s your history with him exactly?”

The question caught me off-guard. “History? I told you, he’s my client at the agency.”

Austin nodded and got a little smirk on his face, like he knew something I didn’t.

“I know, but it’s more than that. Dylan’s not normally rude, not even to me when he sees me around town. He avoids me, of course, and I don’t blame him. I took my sister’s side, naturally. But seeing you with me seemed to send him over the edge. So he has to be more than just a client to you.”

I sat on the couch but didn’t lean back against his arm. “We met about four years ago at Crystal Fountains. A birthday party for his grandfather, who was my grandfather’s best friend. And . . .”
