Hell, maybe I had it all wrong.

Maybe her attention would have turned from me to Todd the minute he walked in no matter what. They seemed to be hitting it off, so maybe she’d have liked him better anyway.

Then Lana looked at me over Todd’s shoulder, and I thought maybe I was wrong.

I stood there while Todd flirted in front of me, and I tried to pretend to be more interested in everything else. I shook my head when Todd asked if there was a problem.

I talked to Grandpa for a little while, then chatted with James, all the while listening to Todd putting the moves on Lana.

Todd laughed at something Lana said, touching her arm lightly as he responded.

"That's crazy! You really told your boss off like that? I wish I could have seen his face," Todd said.

Lana laughed, clearly enjoying the attention.

"Well, someone had to stand up to him. He was being a complete jerk."

"I love that you're not afraid to speak your mind," Todd said, gazing into her eyes. “Beautiful and strong.”

"Oh stop," Lana said, swatting Todd’s arm.

"Just telling the truth," Todd winked. "You'll have to tell me more about it over dinner sometime."

"I'd love that," Lana agreed quickly.

"Great, it's a date then.” Todd grinned, knowing he had closed the deal. “I know this amazing Italian place downtown. Best lasagna you've ever tasted."

"I love Italian," Lana said.

"Me too," Todd lied smoothly.

I rolled my eyes.

Todd was more of a sushi type of guy.

But he probably sensed Lana was more of an Italian kind of girl. He was good at reading people. Part of what made him a top salesman at his job.

I couldn’t listen to this bullshit anymore.

I didn’t have another moment alone with her. I had little choice but to decide that maybe it was for the best.

She clearly liked Todd. And I still wasn’t divorced.

And Lana might have been the kind of distraction I didn’t need.

But it was damn hard to stop looking at her and wishing things were different.

Later, I talked to a couple of the residents for a few minutes. When I turned around, Lana was gone.

She’d left without even saying goodbye to me.

If I needed confirmation that she was no longer interested, there it was.

Todd approached me with that shit-eating grin of his plastered across his face.

"Hey, brother," he greeted, his voice laced with smug satisfaction. “I got her number.”

He waved his phone. I wanted to slap it out of his hand.
