I walk over and begin packing my rucksack, thinking about the email I need to send to Ellie, and wondering how long we will be out for this mission.

Chapter 4

Ellie

I’m currently sitting in my hotel room in New Orleans. My flight was delayed, then I had to wait for a cab to bring me to the hotel. Once I got in and settled, I called Brianne to let her know I was finally here and would meet her in the lobby at eight in the morning. I pull out my laptop, boot it up, and see an email from Ryan. My heart starts pounding, it’s been over a month since I last heard from him. I click on the message.

Hey Ellie,

Just wanted to let you know I am back at the base. It was a long mission, and we may have to go back out again soon. I will try to catch up on your emails before we have our nightly chat. Hopefully tomorrow evening since I know you are traveling today for the book signing in New Orleans. Just email me and let me know you arrived safely. I know this is out of the blue and out of character, but I also want to ask, how would you feel meeting in person on Valentine’s Day for a date?

It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but right now, my plan is to be in Largo, Maine to visit a friend. I’m not sure how far you live from there, since you’ve only told me you live in Maine. I just figured since I would be in your state, maybe we could meet up in person? Let me know what you think.

Talk soon,

Ryan

I sit back in shock. What are the odds his friend lives in Largo. It’s true, I never did tell him what city I lived in. I won’t write it off just yet, but definitely need to take some time to chew it over. I hit reply.

Welcome back, Ryan,

I’m glad you are safe. I made it to New Orleans. The humidity is very high, but I’m happy to be here. This weekend will be a whirlwind, but I will try to email you if I can get some time away from the event, otherwise, I may have to wait until Sunday night after I arrive back home.

As for Valentine’s, I’ll have to get back to you once I look at next year's schedule. I hope you get some time to relax, I, on the other hand, am heading to bed, I have an early morning wake-up call tomorrow.

Good night,

Ellie

I click send, close the laptop, and make my way to the bed. I lay down, but thoughts of meeting Ryan in person keep swirling through my head. The what if’s are playing me really hard. What if he doesn’t like me? What if I’m not what he expects? What if I don’t like him?Ughhh, I need to find a way to shut my brain off.

The event in New Orleans went smoothly, and everyone seemed to have a good time, including Brianne. It was so great seeing her get out of her comfort zone. She looked absolutely stunning in her blue dress, that’s all everyone could talk about.

It’s Monday night, and I am returning from Brianne’s. I took her over some concerning fan mail, that could actually be a stalker. She doesn’t want me to do anything about the letters we received. I feel like she is hiding something from me, but for now, I will honor her wishes and not go to the cops.

I pull out my laptop, and before I send Ryan an email, I think about the conversation I had with Brianne tonight.

“Are you and that guy still talking over that dating app?” she asks me.

“Yes.”

“Is there a problem?”

“I don’t know. He wants to meet in person on Valentine’s Day for a dinner date.”

“What’s wrong with that?”

“What if he doesn’t like the real me in person?”

“What’s not to like? You are beautiful, smart, funny…”

“A bookworm.”

“What is wrong with that? I see nothing wrong with you being a bookworm, that means you are great at your job.”

“I know you are right. I’m just nervous that maybe we are better off behind the screens of the computer than we will be in person.”

“You can’t let fear lead you. Valentine’s is still a few months away. How about you not stress over the in-person meeting right now and just get through the holidays and enjoy the conversations you both have now.”
