Jonathan nods his head. “Well, lucky for you, we just got a mission, all your time can be focused on planning and executing this instead of what happened.”
I nod my head. “Sounds good to me. I do better with missions anyways.”
“Don’t we all,” he chuckles.
Chapter 2
Ryan
Three years later
“Hey, Ry,” Jonathan calls out down the hall.
“Yeah,” I call back.
“You have a phone call.”
I make my way to the Charge of Quarters (CQ) desk.“Sergeant Finnegan, how can I help you sir or ma’am?”
“Ryan, it’s mom.”
“Is dad okay?”
“Yes, he’s fine. Everyone is fine. I need to talk to you.”
I look over at the desk sergeant and nod, before taking the phone into the room behind the desk.“Why didn’t you just skype me?”
“I tried, Son, you didn’t answer. So I called the only other number I had.”
“What is this about, mom?”I sigh, knowing I’ve been dodging her calls.
“Ryan, I need you to know Jeremy and Megan are getting married in August next year. I would like for you to be there to show them your support.”
“Tell them I said congratulations, but I probably won’t be able to come home in a year. Our missions aren’t planned that far ahead.”
“I understand that, son, but I think you need to be here and let them know you hold no ill will toward them.”
“Mom, they don’t care if I support them or not. This has nothing to do with me, hell, I’m surprised they waited this long to get married.”
“Ryan, that’s not true, and you know it. Of course, they want you there. Plus, I may have told everyone a little white lie.”
“What did you do, Mom?”
“I may have possibly mentioned to them that you met a nice girl and moved on.
“WHAT?”I screech out.
“Son, they felt guilty about what happened and the fact that you haven’t been home in three years. I just want everyone to be happy.”
“Why would you lie?”
“Something needed to be done, and it just came out.”
“A lie just came out?”I’m shaking my head, though she can’t see it.
“Well, it kind of backfired on me, they would like to invite her to the wedding too. They are excited to meet her.”
“Excited to meet who? Ghost girl? Just where is this girl going to miraculously come from, Mom?”
