offend you, because I mean none by it.

I have definitely traveled to a lot of places, and you are right, there are some I will never

be able to talk about, but maybe I can tell you about some of the other areas I have traveled to.

I would like to continue talking to you, but I need to be upfront and honest. I go

out on a lot of missions with no notice, and could be gone weeks, or even months at a time. Sometimes we have advanced warning, but others we are leaving out with no notice. I

tell you this, so just in case you don’t hear from me, don’t think I have ghosted you. When I return, I will answer each one of your emails. Also, because of this, I’m not looking for a relationship in the sense of anything romantic. I would like to build a friendship though, maybe like pen pals or something. I know it sounds corny even as I type it out.

However, if this is not something you would be interested in, I completely understand. My career choice and life are not for everyone, especially if you are not guaranteed to hear from me every day, and due to my career, relationships are not always feasible.

I look forward to hearing back from you if you are okay with the above stipulations.

Maybe I’ll hear from you again,

Ryan

I hit send on the email, briefly wondering if I’ll hear from her again, or if all of this would be too much for her. I’m not sure if she’s hoping to find a relationship or if she’s like me, just trying to please a mom and would be okay with a friendship. I guess we will see what happens, at least I can say I was honest.

I decide to gather my clothes and make my way down the hall to the laundry room. I throw all my clothes in the wash, then head to the dayroom to see what the guys are doing until it’s time to put everything in the dryer.

I walk in and see Jonathan on his laptop typing furiously. The rest of the guys are either in front of the tv or around the pool table playing a game. I walk over to where Jonathan is and take a seat across from him. He looks up at me.

“All good?” I ask.

“Yeah, just trying to get some actions completed before I leave this weekend. I can’t predict what I’ll be coming back to when I return in a couple of weeks, so I might as well take care of all this while I can,” he waves his hand in the air as he speaks.

I nod my head agreeing with his assessment. “Anything I can help with?”

“Nah. I’m just doing my rating portion on everyone’s evaluations, it’s that time for everyone’s annual.”

“After this year, we should all receive excellent blocks,” I respond with a chuckle.

“I would agree, but ultimately it’s going to be up to Major Cartwright for the overall rating,” he says, shaking his head.

“Not to speak out of turn, but how can he rate us, when he doesn't even take the opportunity to get to know us?"

"Unfortunately, I can't answer that. He definitely is different from our previous team Commander, but maybe he has his own reasons for doing the things he does. We should at least give him the benefit of doubt and time to adjust to us and the things we do here."

"You are right. So not to change the subject, but what are your thoughts on relationships and the military?"

"Why are you asking?" He looks at me quizzically.

"Mom thinks I should find a nice girl. We already know I tried that, had high hopes, just to have them shattered. I'm curious what your thoughts are?" I ask, not being completely honest, but not lying either.

"Did I ever tell you about the woman I met at my brother's wedding?"

I shake my head, now very intrigued.

"She was the maid of honor, and when I saw her walking down the aisle, it felt like I had been sucker punched on the gut. We spent an amazing night together and when I woke up all that was left was a note that she left me. No name, no way to reach her, just a note basically thanking me for a wonderful night," he shakes his head, reliving the memory.

"Have you tried to find her?" I ask

"Outright? No. When I go home, I look for her on the streets hoping to see her, but I don't even know if she lives in Largo or came from out of town."

"Why haven't you asked your sister-in-law?"
