Page 2 of Saving Sam

I give her a hug and whisper in her ear, “I’m so glad you are okay. I love you.”

“I love you too, Sam,” she whispers back.

I stand up, “It was nice meeting you, Matt.”

He nods his head at me, and I walk out of the room. I make a rash decision to go to the firehouse and see if Connor can answer some questions, before going to Alisa’s house to get some sleep.

The fire department isn’t far, so I walk over there, using the cool Autumn air to keep me awake. Once I’m in front of the firehouse, I can’t help but stand there staring, remembering the times dad would bring Alisa and I up here. I can feel the sting of tears in my eyes, and I quickly shake them away.

I walk into the bay, then the hallway leading to the Chief’s office. I see his Administrative Assistant sitting at her desk.

“Excuse me,” I say, causing her to jump. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you, is Chief Yates in?”

With her hand on her heart she says, “You are fine, I’m okay. I wasn’t expecting anyone. Yes, he’s in, can I ask your name?”

“Tell him Sam Holland is here.”

She nods, knocking on his door, then opens it when he yells, “Come in.”

“Chief, I have a young lady here to see you. She says her name is Sam Holland.”

“Let her in,” I hear his rough voice say, and it sends shivers throughout my body.

She waves to me, and I walk into his office. He stands from behind his desk, and damn, the man looks good. His salt and pepper hair makes him look distinguished, and I want nothing more than to run my fingers through it.

“Samantha, this is a surprise, what are you doing here?” he asks, coming around and pulling me into his hard-muscled body for a hug.

I breathe him in, enjoying the feeling of his arms around me, but I quickly pull back, as I feel the need inside me coil.

“I just left the hospital, from visiting Alisa.”

“What happened to Alisa?”

“She was kidnapped by a serial killer, but she’s okay. Top Grunt Protective Services got to her in time and saved her.”

“I didn’t know, I’ll have to go check on her.”

“I’m sure she would appreciate that. I’m actually here to ask you a question.”

“Okay,” he says, gesturing to a chair, so I take a seat, and he sits in the chair beside me.

“The man who took Alisa, told her he killed our mother years ago, she was one of his first victims. Did dad know, or did he always believe she just left us one day?”

Connor looks at me with a shocked look on his face, then he says, “I think a part of him believed something happened to her, but he wouldn’t allow himself to think like that. Maybe it was easier for him to believe she walked away because that gave him hope that one day she may come back, but he never voiced that he thought she was dead.”

I nod, tears forming in my eyes for the hurt and pain my father must have felt.

“I’m so sorry, Sam,” he tells me, pulling me back into a hug, and this time I don’t pull away quickly, I allow the tears to flow, while enjoying the comfort that Connor is giving me.

Finally, I pull away, “I’m sorry,” I tell him, and he waves his hand like it’s not a big deal.

“How are things going in South Carolina?”

I wipe my eyes, and let out a breath, “Umm, things are going okay. I love my job,” I say with a small, watery smile.

“Are they treating you well there?”

“It’s tough being a female in this profession, but I guess it could be worse,” I tell him with a small chuckle.
