What?

Bro, did I fucking read that right?

Holy fucking shit.

I can’t goddamn believe this.

SHIT.

I laughed softly at his string of messages. He texted like a girl sometimes with short, abrupt sentences and blowing up my phone in rapid succession.

In all seriousness, how are you taking it?

I’m… fine. Surprised to say that, but I’m not upset. I love her.

I’m the godfather, right? Fuck the other guys.

I laughed. My best friend was fucking stupid sometimes. If it was just my decision, then hell yes. But Elizabeth had a voice in this, too.

Not just up to me, dude. She’s the mother. She has a choice in this, too.

I hope you know I’m rolling my eyes right now. Liz loves me. She’ll let me be the godfather. Just you watch.

We’ll see. I don’t think you’ll be the only one clamoring for that position, bro. All of our friends are going to want that title.

I’ll beat all of their asses.

I snickered, trying not to wake Elizabeth up. Kaleb was crazy, but he was also my closest friend. He knew I was only giving him shit. Out of all of our friends, Kaleb was the closest to Liz, and I knew she’d want him to be godfather of our baby as well.

But regardless, just like my girl, our baby would have a small army there to protect it and care for it.

In all seriousness, how is she doing?

She’s sleeping right now, but she’s been an emotional wreck since I got her out of that house. Taking it all one step at a time.

That’s all you can do, man.

Elizabeth shifted, grunting softly before resuming her snoring. I pressed a kiss to the top of her head.

One day at a time.

Kaleb was leaning against his car when I pulled my truck into the park beside him. As soon as I shifted the car into park, he opened Liz’s door, grinning up at her. She was still pretty tired, but she was determined to carry on as normal. I’d only allowed it after she promised she would let me know if she needed to go home to rest. Lord knew she hadn’t had near enough rest over the weekend.

“Hey, girly. How are you feeling?”

She looked over at me, a questioning look in her eyes along with a hint of wariness. I nodded at her. “He’s my best friend, baby girl. He knows.”

She blew out a soft breath before looking back at Kaleb. “Nauseated,” she muttered. “Help me down?”

He gripped her hips and gently eased her down from the truck. By the time she was on her feet, I was already at her side. I cupped her cheek, concern washing through me. She was looking a little pale, and it took everything in me not to put her back in that truck and take her back home. “You good?”

She nodded, determined. “I’ll let you know if I need to go home,” she reassured me. “Can we head inside now?”

I grabbed her hand in mine, shouldering her bag. Kaleb walked on her other side, both of us guarding her. “You want a preggie pop?” Kaleb asked her out of the blue, looking up from his phone. He showed us his screen where a list of morning sickness remedies were listed. “I can have one delivered.”

She smiled a little but shook her head. “I’m sure it’ll pass.”

I sighed. “Order her one please,” I told my best friend, ignoring my girlfriend’s scowl. She’d get over it. I just wanted her comfortable, and if a preggie pop might help, then she’d have one.

As soon as he had it ordered, Kaleb said he’d wait by the school doors to grab the delivery and would see us later. Liz and I stepped inside the school, and she gagged, immediately rushing for the nearest bathroom. Not giving a fuck about the school rules, I barged inside as well, ignoring the screaming girls.

“Easy,” I soothed, rubbing Elizabeth’s back as she threw up. I held her hair out of the way, hating myself for putting her in his position.

“I hate this part,” she croaked once she was able to talk.

I wrapped my arms around her and helped her up from the floor. “I know, baby. Take some deep breaths. I’ve got a water in my bag for you. Let’s go rinse your mouth out.”

A wobbly smile tilted her lips. She still didn’t look all that great, still looked like she was going to vomit again at any given moment. I was worried about her, but I kept my feelings to myself. Mom had warned me morning sickness might happen, and if Elizabeth didn’t want it to affect her day-to-day, I couldn’t fight her on it. I could only be there for her.

Dad had taken pity on me. Said my mom was the same way. All he could do was just hold her hair back, do what he could to lessen the nausea, and let her be her independent self.
