My gaze slowly moves downwards as my eyes drink him up; heat fills my body with each inch. He must have noticed my staring because a faint smile edges its way onto his perfect lips, and that’s when I realize how badly I’m getting distracted.

I need to get back on track.

"What the hell were you thinking?" I say, angrily.

"Oh, you remember me now?" he teases.

"Well, I couldn't exactly pretend I knew you in my workplace, could I? People would have asked questions and what would I have said? I fucked you when I didn't know you were my boss’s boss?" I retort, sarcastically.

He grins in response, a deep, mischievous smile. He moves closer to me, and his cologne fills the air. I can feel my pulse racing as he stares into my eyes.

“Well,” he says, “I guess not. To what do I owe the pleasure for your attendance today?”

"I ... what?" I stammer, blushing. I hadn't expected him to say something like this.

"Why are you here, Olivia?" he asks softly, spelling it out for me. His voice is low and seductive as he speaks, and I take a step back suddenly, remembering where I am, who he is, trying to keep some distance between us despite the intense attraction I feel toward him.

"Did you ask for me to work for you?” I go on the offense. "If you did, I need you to know that whatever there is between us will remain strictly professional."

He eyes me from head to toe, a sinful look in his gaze. "I'm sure we can come up with something cleverer than strictly professional ..." He pauses for a beat, and the electricity between us is almost palpable. "We could always pick up where we left off ..." His voice is deep and suggestive, and I can feel my heart flutter in response.

“What?” I ask, shocked.

He takes a step back and rolls his eyes, “I’m only joking, Olivia. I’m just as confused as you are and now, if you don’t mind answering my question. Why are you here?”

“Sangton put me on your team. I thought you asked for it.”

“I did no such thing,” he says, looking confused. “What do you mean, my team?”

“He said that he noticed you took a professional liking to me the other day and has assigned me to work with you.”

“Now that you mention it,” he says, walking over to his desk and pulling out a notebook, “my secretary did mention we’ll be having a new paralegal joining us from today, but she didn’t write a name. So, it’s you, huh?”

“You had nothing to do with this?” I ask.

“Nothing at all. Why would I? You’re in charge of your own career.”

I nod, “I wish you hadn’t stood up for me in front of Sangton. Now, I’m being forced to work for you.”

“Does it come with a pay hike?” he asks, grinning.

“Stop it,” I hiss. “This isn’t a joke. I didn’t ask for this.”

“Neither did I, Oliva,” he says. “Please, sit down. Let’s talk about this.”

I sit across from him. He pours me a glass of water and hands it to me. “Look, I don’t want you to be working here if you don’t want to. I had no idea you’d been assigned to me. If you like, I can call Sangton and tell him to send a replacement. Would that make you happy?”

“What?” I scoff “So Sangton thinks I’m being replaced for being incompetent? No way in hell am I allowing that to happen.”

He remains quiet, as do I.

“So, what can I do?” he asks.

“Nothing,” I sigh after giving it thought. “This isn’t your problem, and I shouldn’t have put it on you. Clearly, Sangton made this decision on his own, and I’ve been reassigned. That’s that.”

“That’s that,” he says. “So, you’ll be working here from now on?”

“I have no other choice, do I?” I say.
