The muscles in his jaw twitch.

Sore subject.

“They understand.”

My fingers are already tingling to touch him. Going through the night might be difficult.

Lots of wine.

That will do the trick.

“Do you think you’ll survive without me for one night?” I tease, trying to lighten the suddenly tense atmosphere in the car.

His knuckles whiten around the steering wheel. “After next week, I’ll have to survive without you every night.”

That stings more than it should.

At least I know where his head is at.

I can’t help but wish I didn’t.

I like pretending.

It keeps me whole.

But he doesn’t see us existing after I leave our vacuum.

“Fuck,” he curses when my face pales. “I didn’t mean for it to come out that way.”

“It’s fine. You’re right. It would have been boring in that house if we didn’t pass our time with each other, wouldn’t it?”

I try to smile, but it’s shaky, and my heart is quietly breaking.

You know what this is, Claire.

I do.

But we made rules and broke them, and now I’m dealing with the consequences of hope.

If I could go back in time and change any of it, would I?

No, because my heart is too eager for punishment.

I got myself into this mess. I need to get myself out of it.

He pulls the car to an abrupt stop at the side of the road.

“No,” I moan, faking another sob. “We’re so close.”

“Claire!” he explodes, startling me enough to spin around. Hands on either side of my head, he forces me to look at him.

I can’t.

He’ll see it.

I’m a horrible liar.

Run, Claire.
