Right here in this car, everything stops.

Gasping, it does little to breathe life into my frozen body.

My skin tingles when he lifts my hand and presses a kiss on my palm.

“I promise I’m trying.”

There goes my greedy heart, reaching out and grabbing it. Even when it knows that if he’s trying doesn’t work, it will shatter.

Without looking, he presses his thumb to the corner of my mouth. “Smile for me, baby.”

I try.

I can’t.

Because the world stopped spinning.

“Can we just enjoy the beach for tonight?”

I close my eyes and let the final tear fall.

I nod.

I keep nodding.

He grabs my hand again.

The world starts spinning.

Chapter Thirty-One

“Well, this isn’t the welcome I was expecting.”

I stand with my arms crossed, staring at two sleeping bodies on the sofa.

“I know I only saw him yesterday, but Jesus, he obviously didn’t miss me as much as I’ve missed him.” Jake frowns, disappointed.

Jay-Jay and Ava are practically comatose, mouths open, flushed cheeks with feet in each other’s faces.

“How are they even comfortable?” I ask.

“Ah, young love,” Rose whispers, joining us as we gawk at the children. “Alex took them to the playground this morning. They’re exhausted.”

I look up at Jake. “They won’t be this age forever. You know Alex is going to kick your ass, right?”

He blows out a breath. “Yeah, and I’ll have to take it.”

“And that, honey—” Rose cups Jake’s face like he’s a child “—will be called karma for all the girl’s hearts you broke.”

He rolls his eyes, scoffing a laugh as he wraps her in a hug. “If I remember correctly, your daughter was quick to show me my place.”

“Oh, Mr. Williams, you were a ladies’ man, were you?” I tease, nudging him with my elbow.

I’m not surprised.

“Don’t listen to her, Rose. She’s trouble and a pain in my ass.”

I lean toward her and whisper, “It’s my favorite hobby.”
