He doesn’t take his eyes off me.

Stilling when my back presses against the piano, he whispers against my mouth, “This cold heart has started beating again for you.”

Lifting me onto the piano, I wrap my arms around his neck. His kisses trail between my breasts before he sucks each nipple into his mouth. My head falls back, and I think if I don’t feel him inside me, I’ll go crazy.

With every touch, he erases all the ones before him. They never existed.

It’s only him.

It always will be.

“Please, Jake,” I cry.

Hand on the small of my back, he fills me as his name rips from my lips and floats in the air around us.

“Don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise.” Eyes locked, he thrusts into me, harder and harder. “You’re fucking perfect, being you.”

Before I can stop it, a single tear leaks from the corner of my eye.

I am hopelessly in love with this man.

Reading me like he always does, he erases the moisture with his lips against my cheek.

I can only hope he feels it too when he says, “I know, baby. Hold on to me. I’ve got you.”

My ankles lock around his waist as he buries himself deeper, and we both fall apart together.

Chapter Thirty-Five

Jake wasn’t in bed when I woke this morning. Only an empty space took his place on the other side.

Panicking, I grab my phone to call him, only to see a text.

Jake: I’ve some things I need to do this morning. Come home after work. We need to talk. You’re still trouble, but you’re my trouble.

A simple text and my stomach turns inside out with butterflies.

I think we might be doing this. Whateverthisis. I guess I’ll find out for sure later. And I need more answers. I need to know what happened last night with Rob. What happened with us.

I dress quickly, deciding to grab a coffee at work. The kids are leaving for a day trip to the zoo, and I don’t want to miss them.

When I pull into the parking lot, Sam is the first face to greet me. I like Sam, but I hate him right now.

What is he doing here?

Kids are piling onto the bus in front of the shelter.

“Morning, Claire,” they chime, waving at me.

I hold out a hand to Sam. He can wait.

Hannah bounces over to me, the problematic bunny dangling in her arm. “Is Mom coming home today?”

“We’re not sure yet, sweetie. Maybe. But when you’re done at the zoo, I’ll bring you to meet your new baby sister.”

Her shoulders bounce up and down before she skips away and onto the bus.

“You sure you don’t want to do this instead of me?” Amelia asks.
