His head is buried in the crook of my neck, and the relief that washes over me is all I need to ease the pain in my chest.

An anguished sob ruptures from his shoulders. I feel every painful cry and my heart breaks in two.

“Jake,” I croak, my voice barely a whisper. “I’m okay.”

He snaps back. Hot amber eyes dance over me.

But I’m tired.

I’ve never been so tired.

My head aches, and I think I’m swallowing shards of glass.

His head falls against mine as he holds me up, supporting all my weight. And in the middle of this chaos, he kisses me. It’s deep, it’s hard, and it breathes every ounce of life I lost back into me.

My life support.

“Keep your head down. I need to get you out of here.”

Sparks dance in the air. The orange glow around us triggers another wave of adrenaline.

It’s hot.

It’s not licking at our skin yet, but it’s close.

There’s so much smoke.

He went through with it.

Hannah.

Palms digging into the floor, I ignore every pounding in my body and slip out of Jake’s arms. But my legs shake, and I collapse against him.

Body don’t betray me now.

I need to get her out of here.

It’s my fault.

I need to get her.

My lungs fill again, but it’s murky.

I just need more air.

Clawing at his shoulders, I manage to stand straight, and I run.

“Claire,” he screams.

My knees threaten to buckle, but I’m holding on.

“We need to get her out of here.”

He’s on my heels as I race upstairs, grabbing me by the waist and yanking me around. I fist his shirt, endless tears streaming from my eyes.

“Hannah.”

“Go. I’ll get her.”
