Birds should be sleeping.

But it’s beautiful.

Maybe the fire woke them.

Hannah looks too. She’s quiet now.

“Claire?” I look back at him. “We need to get you to the hospital.”

“Will you come?” I ask.

“I’ll come.”

It’s painful when he tucks his hands under my arms and lifts me to my feet.

Hannah is so heavy now, but I hold on.

She needs me.

It’s bright in the ambulance.

I don’t like it.

People are touching me, but Hannah isn’t screaming.

Nobody touches her.

I think she’s asleep.

Jake is holding my hand.

I’m safe with him.

“I’m tired,” I try to tell them, but they don’t listen.

Jake listens.

“I know. Put your head here.” He presses my head to his shoulder.

It’s warm.

He’s always warm.

“You got to me on time,” I mutter.

My eyes close.

I sleep.

***

“Stop touching her,” I roar as I wake.

Someone is trying to take her away.

Lungs burning, I sit up on the bed, gripping Hannah in my arms.

She’s still sleeping.
