Our baby.

Shaking, I brush my fingers over tiny cheeks, eyes, nose, and ears.

“Congratulations, you have a daughter.” The midwife smiles again.

I like her smile now.

“Hi, baby girl,” I whisper as her eyes begin to open.

The bluest, most perfect eyes I’ve ever seen.

I look at my husband.

My blubbering husband.

“I thought I was going to be the mess here.” I laugh as he takes my hand and kisses me.

“Hey, Princess.” His eyes gloss over, and he runs a finger over her arm. “You’re perfect, just like your mama.”

One look.

That’s all it takes.

And I’ve lost him forever.

I don’t care.

It’s stiff competition around here.

I wipe the stray tear from his cheek.

I kiss the top of her head, her little fingers, her chubby arms.“You have a big brother that’s going to be very excited to meet you.”

Jake brushes my hair back from my face. “You’re amazing, baby.”

“I am, aren’t I?” I joke.

I throw my head back on the pillow, exhausted, but there’s too much adrenaline rushing through my blood.

“I’m sorry. I don’t want you to get a vasectomy. But doing this once is enough. Two kids are plenty for anyone.”

He chuckles as the midwife takes our daughter for her measurements.

He kisses me again and again and again.

“I love you so much.”

“Always,” I agree.

My eyes flutter open, heavy with sleep. I stretch out on the bed, my muscles lax and well rested.

Too well rested.

I glance beside me. Jake is stirring now too, and I watch as realization flashes across his face.

“Did you get up with Ella this morning?”
