“I can’t.”

“Why? Cat got your tongue?”

She puffs out her cheeks, eyes anywhere but on me. “I can’t drink wine. I can’t drink any alcohol for a while.”

“Why?”

She casts imploring eyes on me as she waits.

“Oh.”

Oh.

“Claire…” I leap to my feet, taking her with me. The realization hits me like a punch to the gut.

“No more babies, Jake. This is the last time. You’re not allowed to touch me ever again.” She’s laughing and crying all at once.

It would be an easy promise to make if I could keep my hands off her for more than ten minutes.

Curling my fingers under her chin, I tilt her head back, wiping away the fresh tears.

I don’t know how it’s possible, but I think she’s more breath-taking in this moment than she was the first day I met her.

My stomach is tying in knots with all the best nerves. “How long have you known?”

“About ten minutes.”

I don’t answer. I kiss her until we’re both breathless and stealing the air from each other.

A sob makes her voice thick when she asks, “You’re happy?”

“So fucking happy, baby.” I press my thumb to the corner of her mouth. “Now smile for me.”

She does. Despite her tears, her mouth curls up into the most beautiful smile.

Her arms drape around my neck as I press my hands to the small of her back and feel the curve of her waist.

My world is about to get a little bigger.

It spins a little faster too.

Hand on her waist, I lace my fingers in hers. “Dance with me?”

After one more kiss, she rests her head on my chest and whispers, “Forever.”

The End
