“Oh, but you are.” Kneeling, I meet his eyes. Nora is right. The answer is obvious. I needed a little push, and Jay-Jay gave me the shove I needed. “I play piano too.”

It’s both comical and unnerving when he and Jake respond together. “You do?”

Nora’s at my side, patting my shoulder. “Oh, yes. Our Claire was something of a prodigy.”

“Don’t be dramatic, Nora.” Winking at Jay-Jay, I say, “She’s a little deaf.”

He giggles.

I stand, bouncing from one foot to another, pulse racing, and any tiredness I felt from the day is gone.

I spin on my heels and forget Jake is so close, I need to tip my head back to look at him.

Winking, I take a tiny step closer. I’m sure my grin is scary, but I need him if I want to do this.

He takes a tentative step back.

I continue toward him, fluttering my eyelashes.

“Hey, Mr. Deep Pockets,” I try to say, but I can’t hold it together long enough and burst into laughter.

Throwing his head back, he groans, and I’m almost ready to admit how wrong I was about him because he doesn’t want to know what my plans are. He simply asks, “What do you need?”

Chapter Thirteen

“You’re taking this very seriously. You look like a hippie.” Jake eyes me when I open my front door. I pull at my dungarees overall, swaying on my feet.

What?

I use it for painting.

Instead, I smile and say, “Thanks.”

Grabbing my bag, I close the door after me, choosing to ignore the heat in my cheeks when his eyes halt at my breasts. It’s only a beat, but he doesn’t hide it fast enough.

I take in his navy slacks and white button-down.

“I’m assuming you consider this casual?”

He shrugs. “These? These are my workout clothes.”

Jake has one condition for my music room idea—I must decorate it myself.

First on my list is paint because those white walls give me a migraine. His sister-in-law, April, is an interior designer and decorated the shelter.

It’s beautiful.

But she has other jobs, so it’s just me and Mr. Sunshine.

He didn’t offer to help. I guilted him into it.

“Where’s Jay-Jay?”

“He stays with his grandparents on Friday nights. I’ll pick him up this evening.”

I pout, disappointed. “I was hoping he’d come. He’s more fun than you.”

A deep laugh vibrates in his chest. “I know.”
