“Have you seen his wife’s face?”

“I know,” I blow out, running my fingers through my hair as I begin to pace. Or maybe I was always pacing. I don’t remember.

I hardly remember driving here.

“I need to bring these to the station. Don’t go home.”

My heart sinks.

“We need the bunny.”

Crossing his arms over his chest, his eyes scan my face like I’ve lost my damn mind.

“You have a stalker, and you’re worried about the bunny.”

“Stalker is a little dramatic, Sam.”

“Explain the music comment.”

I can’t, and nausea rocks in my stomach.

“Beth only arrived last night. Do you think he’s been following me before now?”

A torturous second passes before he shakes his head slowly and shrugs.

I’m going to be sick.

“He’s a fucking psychopath. He knows Jake helped her before. Maybe he was expecting it, or maybe he’s trying to get under Jake’s skin.”

It will work.

He’s going to lose his mind.

“The bunny,” I plead, feeling a headache coming on. “She doesn’t sleep without it.”

I reach out to grab it, but he dodges me.

“I’m trying to build a case here. You’re not getting the bunny, and I’m going to repeat this once more. Do. Not. Go. Home. He’s dangerous.”

Sighing, I grab my phone, snap a picture of the cuddly toy in the box, and slip my hands through my coat.

“Where the hell are you going?”

“Don’t worry. I’m not going home.”

“You should stay here. I need to bring this to the station. I’ll be back this evening, and we can discuss.”

I can’t stay here. My mind will run riot.

“I won’t be long. I’ll be back before you are.” I try to reassure him, but he’ll need to handcuff me to make me stay.

“He won’t like this, Claire,” he shouts after me.

No doubt whoheis.

I spin on my heels, taking backward steps. “Then don’t tell him.”

“I have to tell him.”
