He doesn’t see the funny side at all.

Honestly, either do I, but right now, if I don’t laugh, I’ll cry.

“Are you fucking with me?” he snaps, proving his lack of amusement to my current predicament. “He was at your house, and you laugh when I step too close. What would you ever do if you came face to face with him? Roll over and chuckle?”

I bite my lip and swallow another wave of laughter. “Probably,” I choke out.

Wrong answer.

His body stiffens, and he pinches the bridge of his nose before pinning his eyes back to me.

“Claire?” Amy snaps my attention to her. Her face blanches. “What’s going on?”

Sam explains under his breath, and with every word, her eyes widen. Tears brim, and it breaks my heart. It also brings me back to reality.

“Amy,” I plead. “I’m fine.”

“Stay with me,” she offers.

“No,” Jake explodes, making me jump. He turns to Amy, and there are a million unspoken words between them. “I need her safe. I need her with me.”

She nods in agreement.

“Amy,” I scold. She’s my last resort for backup. “I don’t need a babysitter.”

“Listen to yourself, Claire. Don’t make her mistakes.” A single tear slips from her chin.

“What about Jay-Jay? I won’t put him at risk.”

“He’s leaving with his grandparents in a few days. They’re going to the beach house.”

“Since when?”

“Since now.”

Talking to Sam, he doesn’t break our eye contact when he speaks.“Sam?”

“Uh, huh?”

“Do me a favor?” Jake asks flatly, shooting me a wicked smirk.

“Sure thing, buddy.”

“Cover your ears and close your eyes or get the hell out of here because I’m pretty sure I’m about to do something illegal and kidnap this frustratingly stubborn woman. If I have to carry her out of here myself, she’s coming with me.”

I freeze, but it’s not so funny this time.

He would never.

Would he?

Sam chuckles, and I hear his footsteps leaving.

“I need to get home to April, anyway. I’m sure you two can sort this out.”

Jake grins that shit-eating grin that makes me want to punch him. “Thanks.”

“Yeah, thanks for nothing, Sam.”
