“You’re not tired?”

A blush rushes to her cheeks. It’s fucking beautiful. “No.”

“Come on then.”

The storm has passed, but the trickle of rain still falls on the roof. We’re covered on the porch as we take our seats and look at the moon dancing on the lake. The air is fresh, but still clings to the summer heat. Missy takes her place at my feet.

Beth curls her legs under herself. Her shoulders relax with a long breath. “God, I love it here.”

“Good.”

“Careful, I might never want to leave.”

“I told you already, you’re welcome to stay as long as you want.”

Her thank you is a smile and dip of her chin. “So, tell me, what’s going on in your life?”

“Ain’t you too young for those creams?”

“I’m thirty-two.”

I blink at her.

“Oh, come on,” she implores, leaning on the arm of her chair.

“Don’t you have Molly and Eden for this kind of shit? They’re your friends.”

“And so are you.”

Friend.

That word makes my next drink of beer taste bitter.

“Hot dates?”

I don’t answer.

She grimaces. “Not-so-hot dates?”

“I’m not doing this with you, pretty girl.”

She flutters her eyelashes with that shit-eating grin on her face. Now I know where Hannah gets it from.

I’m not known for holding my tongue, but I find myself doing it around Beth.

But she asked. I’ll answer.

“I met a beautiful woman six weeks ago. Well, that’s not true, we met before, but I bumped into her again recently.”

Her mouth falls open. “Oh, do tell.”

I take a long drink before crossing my ankle over my leg.

“She’s sexy as hell, funny, smart, has great t—”
