“You can always eat.”

His smile is enough to ward off the morning chill.

By one o’clock, Skip and Archer were here to help finish the playhouse. I say playhouse lightly. At this stage I’m unsure if it’s a playhouse or a small apartment. Either way, they’ve been out there for hours and are determined to finish it before the girls get home.

I called Kim earlier to tell her what’s going on. She agreed to hold off on bringing the girls home for a few hours.

They finished just in time.

Kim makes sure to park out front, so the girls are none the wiser. I want to see their reactions, and as much as I want to be the one to show them, this isn’t mine to give.

“Did you two have fun?”

“Yep,” Hannah agrees, hugging me as Isabel climbs into my arms.

Kim wraps her arms around my shoulders. “I can’t believe he’s building them a playhouse,” she whispers low enough so the girls won’t hear.

I nod, my eyes wide, saying “I know” without saying it.

Keeping me close, she whispers, “Are you not turned on right now because I’m close to orgasm?”

I sigh. “Absolutely.”

She gently slaps her palm against my cheek. “My poor sister.”

“Ladies.” Logan steps into the living room covered in sweat and sex appeal.

Kim steps forward and grabs his chin. “You are my favorite person right now.”

“Happy to know.” I think that’s what he says, but she has his lips squished together.

Releasing him, she goes out back and takes out her phone to record.

Isabel wiggles out of my arms and climbs into Logan’s just like she always does.

Hannah has a new soccer ball under her arm. “You wanna play later?”

“Of course, but your mom has something to show you first.”

My heart swells because he wants to give me the credit.

I shake my head. This is his moment, and I can’t wait to stand back and watch.

“There’s a surprise out back for you, but Logan did everything.”

Stepping forward, he takes my hand. “Okay, it was both of us.”

It wasn’t. It was all him.

But he wants me here in this moment.

And that’s it.

We’re a team for today.

I did nothing but make breakfast, and he won’t acknowledge it. To him, I might as well have been out there building.
