My heart always did yearn for punishment.

Most of all, I want to. We spend most of our free nights together on the porch, but there’s something about having a night with Logan, alone and away from home, that makes my insides somersault.

And like he said, it’s as friends. Just two friends hanging out. But my stupid heart doesn’t register it that way.

Feeling my lips tilt until my cheeks hurt, I agree with a nod. “Okay. For tonight, you can wine and dine me.”

His laugh under his breath makes my skin tingle. “There she is.”

“But Logan, it better be good. I have high expectations now.”

He presses a chaste kiss to the top of my head and steps away, leaving only warm air in his wake. “Nothing but the best for you, baby.”

Excitement builds in my chest until I’m giddy, but I smother it, not wanting to seem too enthusiastic. I haven’t lost all dating etiquette. I’m not a teenager anymore. But fuck, I really want to stomp my feet and squeal like one.

He backs away towards his house. “You have an hour.”

“If you’re late you can’t blame traffic,” I joke, swaying on my feet because my limbs can’t stay still anymore.

“An hour.”

“Wait,” I call after him. “What should I wear?”

His lips twitch with amusement. “Beth, wear a damn black sack, you’ll still look beautiful.”

I roll my eyes. “Save the compliments for later, King. Seriously, where are you taking me?”

He shrugs, taking another step back.

“Logan,” I groan. “Give me a clue.”

He shrugs again.

Infuriating.

“Fine, I’ll wear something hideous and embarrass you.” I’m on my way to find my sexiest outfit.

Another shrug. “You’ll still be fucking breath-taking.”

“Compliments for later, remember? And I’m going to need so many to make up for this.”

Throwing my head back, I almost scream before stomping back to my house, but it’s all an act because my stomach is in knots, anticipation making every nerve in my body tingle.

“Beth.”

I spin around, smiling despite myself. With bated breath, I wait for him to tell me where we’re going.

He wipes the threatening smile from his lips with his thumb, his eyes drinking me in head to toe and back again. “Nothing, pretty girl. Just looking.”

I'm sitting on a mountain of clothes when Molly and Eden appear at the doorway of my bedroom. Concerned about the pathetic pile I've fallen into, they take in my disheveled state: hair neither up nor down because I couldn't decide, a dress pooling at my waist with a skirt underneath because, again, I couldn't decide, only one shoe on, and sweat forming on my brow. I'm an indecisive mess.

I blow out a breath as I look over at them. It’s not below me to beg for help, but I don’t need to. They’re at my side and sitting in my clothes with me.

Molly crosses her legs under her and picks at the items of clothing. “We heard there’s an emergency.”

I don’t ask, but I’m assuming Cora told Molly and the message was passed on. Being the friends they are, they knew I would need all the help I could get.
