“You’ve got more surprises up your sleeve, Twinkle Toes?”

“Yes, and Beth? Don’t ever call me Twinkle Toes again, or you’ll find yourself over my knee.”

Heat crawls its way up my neck. Not just because of his words, but the waiter is still clearing the table, and even he squirms.

When the waiter leaves and my heart climbs out of my throat, I raise an eyebrow. “Did you really have to say that?”

“Want me to do it here with everyone watching?”

I swallow. Hard. “I think they have enough of a view,” I reply, getting to my feet before he makes good on his threat. “So, where are we headed?”

He reaches for my hand, lacing our fingers together. There’s a softness in his gaze. It’s endearing and somehow, incredibly sexy. It makes my heart race in a way nothing else can.

“Just a little farther,” he says, guiding me towards the path that leads away from the restaurant. I can hear a waterfall in the distance, its rumble soothing, like a whispered lullaby. I know where we’re going, but the anticipation is intoxicating.

As we walk, his fingers gently squeeze mine. It’s a small gesture, but it sends a bolt of electricity through me.

He’s clawing deeper under my skin. And the scariest part? I’m letting him. I’m not even putting up a fight.

As we continue walking, the sound of cascading water grows louder. My pulse quickens in tandem. Logan has an arm securely around my waist, guiding me towards the water’s shimmering curtain.

I hear the murmur of other people around us, the distant sound of laughter and conversation. Yet, as we approach the waterfall, I feel like we’ve stepped into our own private corner of the world.

When I think we’re just going to stand and watch, Logan takes another step.

“What are you… Wait, are we going behind it?” I ask, eyes wide. The waterfall, although beautiful, looks intense, and I’m not exactly dressed for a swim.

That look in his eyes tells me he’s up to something. “Trust me?”

I nod.

Before I have the chance to voice any other reservations, he’s guiding me towards the curtain of water. I gasp, close my eyes, and follow. The cold spray instantly chills my skin, but then he’s pulling me through the veil, and surprisingly, we’re not soaked.

Behind the waterfall, a cavernous space has been carved out by nature. The thunderous sound of water hitting water fills the air around us, creating a barrier that isolates us from the rest of the world.

In here, it’sourworld.

Our world is breathtaking.

When I’ve finished gawking and close my gaping mouth, Logan pulls me close. “What do you think?”

“I… it’s amazing,” I stammer, my words not doing it justice.

The enchantment of the space draws me in completely, but something on the other side catches my attention. My eyes are drawn to a photographer capturing a bride and groom on their wedding day. The scene is undoubtedly beautiful—the bride glowing, and the groom elated. It brings a pang of nostalgia, a memory of a life once lived. But there’s something off.

“See that?” I point. “The photographer should change her angle. The light from the sun setting is better from the west.”

He peers in the direction I’m pointing, a bemused smile playing on his lips. “I’ll take your word for it.” His hand squeezes mine gently, bringing my attention back to him. “Just saying… it could be you.”

I try to hide the memories from playing so visibly on my face and shake my head with a smile. “Who? The photographer or the woman in the white dress?”

Teasing, he presses his fingers into the curve of my waist. “Jesus, Beth, you move fast. I mean, you haven’t even let me feel you up yet.” My laugh echoes around us, blending with the roar of the waterfall, his humor dispelling the wistful thoughts.

Despite his jest, his words reverberate in my head, creating ripples in the calm pool of my mind.

Both of those women… the one with the camera and the one in the beautiful dress feel like people from a different time in a very different life.
