Then she starts to gather her things, and everything warning me to stay away is wrestling with the unexplainable need to keep her close.
Just not too close.
I can do that.
When she stands, it’s definitely too close.
I expect her to take a step away when I don’t, but nothing. Brown pools slide up to meet my eyes.
“Thanks for today.” She does this weird punch thing on my arm. I see when she immediately regrets it.
Pulling her out of her misery, I finally say, “Everyone is heading to a bar down the street. Jaxson’s band is playing.”
She stares up at me, unblinking, but remains mute.
“Would you like to come?” I say slowly, fighting my own smile as her mouth begins to part.
Composing herself, her lips turn into a smirk. “Are you asking me out?”
This isn’t what this is, and it’s far from what I meant. “No.”
She picks up her bag from the floor and packs away her camera. “Because this feels like a date.”
“How does this feel like a date?”
She shrugs. “I mean you bought me dinner—”
“I bought you pancakes. That was breakfast.”
“I’ve met your family… twice. And now you’re asking me to a bar for some drinks and music and dancing... with your friends.”
I’m sure I’m gawking at her like a wild animal. “How the hell did you get all that from me asking if you want to joineveryoneat the bar?”
Another shrug before she winks at me. “So, no dancing?”
“I don’t dance.”
Her eyes rake me in from head to toe and back again, clearly amused. “Hmm. That’s a shame.”
I can’t tell if she’s teasing of if she’s still high. “Did Jaxson give you something?”
“Yeah, a belly ache from laughing.”
She walks away, only turning back at the office door. “You coming?”
My head is spinning.
“Coming where?”
She tilts her head like she feels sorry for me.
And that makes me want to punish her for it.
“The bar. On ournotdate.” I resist the urge to chew the inside of my jaw just to stop from smiling before she adds, “I’m not missing out on seeing the Savage Saints live… And Logan?”
“What?”
“You should smile more often.”
