There’s got to be thousands of taxis in this godforsaken city, but not one will stop for me. Swearing under my breath, I drop my hand as another yellow cab ignores my existence.

Is anything going to go my way tonight?

Feeling the burn in my feet, I’m reminded of how fast I rushed out of there, of who I was running from.

My phone buzzes in my bag. A quick glance tells me it’s Claire, but I can’t get into this right now. Instead, I shoot her a text to let her know I’ll call her tomorrow.

It’s as I put my phone away, I feel a prickle dance along my spine, my skin breaking out in goosebumps, and it has nothing to do with the evening chill.

“Running from me again, pretty girl?”

The breath leaves my lungs in a whoosh.

A simple sentence, and I go back in time.

Spinning around, I find myself staring into a pair of piercing eyes.

He’s dressed in a sharp, dark suit that accentuates the breadth of his shoulders and the lean lines of his body. His midnight hair is tousled in a deliberately disheveled way. God, he’s beautiful, and with a slight twitch of his lips, my breath catches in my throat.

“You followed me?” I breathe. “Why?”

He shrugs, his eyes never leaving mine. “You ran.”

Heat crawls up my neck. “I didn’t run,” I correct him before looking down at my feet. “I can’t run in heels.”

With his deep chuckle, some awkwardness slips away.

Surveying the busy street once more, the reality that I won’t be catching a cab anytime soon starts to sink in, so I take a deep breath, roll my shoulders back, and plaster a friendly smile on my face. Time to take back a sliver of my dignity.

“Let me start this again. I was in a little bit of shock last time,” I say, extending my hand. He looks down at it with an arched brow. “Shake my hand.”

He does, engulfing mine.

I remind myself to breathe. Breathing is good.

“Oh my God, Logan. It’s been a long time. How are you?”

The corners of his eyes crinkle as he grins. It’s the only indication that this man’s body has experienced ten years since we last met.

“Considering I’ve just chased after a beautiful woman that I haven’t seen in a decade, I’d say the night has gotten a hell of a lot more interesting than it was.”

I drop my hand, only because his compliment seems genuine, and I feel… uncomfortable.

His smile softens, as do his eyes, and I swear, if I look hard enough, I’ll see sympathy in there.

“How have you been… Beth?” he asks, hesitating like he’s adjusting to the name.

That’s a loaded question, but I give him the stranger’s answer because he’s not more than that. “Good. I’d be better if I could get a cab.” I try and fail to hail another. “Want to help?” I ask, turning back to him. I’m getting desperate.

He stares back at the building we just came from before his hands slide into his pocket. The motion somehow makes him seem bigger. “You’ll be half the night trying to get a taxi here. Let me drive you home,” he offers, almost too casually. This meeting obviously isn’t having the same effect on his nervous system as it is mine.

“I can’t.” I shake my head, feeling my heart beat bruising rhythms against my chest. A car is too small of a space to share with him. I won’t be able to contain the emotions on the verge of boiling over. “Besides,” I add with a smile, the old memory resurfacing, “Last I remember, you liked to ride around on one of those death traps. A Harley and this dress won’t work.”

He leans in slightly, enough for me to get a whiff of his heavenly cologne. “Believe it or not, I also drive a car.”

“I really can’t. I mean, I don’t even know you. Not really.”

He’s not offended, his features impassive. “Don’t you?”
