“Now that’s a secret not even Google will tell you.”

Just when I think I’m getting somewhere, Logan strides into the café, his arrival as impactful as a thunderstorm. A T-shirt clings to his muscular torso, and faded jeans fit him like they’re tailored. The sight of him alone is enough to make my pulse spike, but it’s the dark look in his eyes that makes my heart lurch.

Glaring from me to Ace, his gaze is so heavy and intent, I’m surprised it doesn’t physically hurt.

“What are you doing?” He’s looking at Ace, but I think the question is aimed at me.

“Getting a few club secrets,” I answer lightly.

His glare deepens on Ace who simply shrugs, casts me another signature wink, and says, “See you around, Beth,” before walking away.

I can’t help but think back to what he said earlier. About Logan “using the services”. I push down the nauseous feeling that stirs in my gut at the thought of what that might mean.

“What can I get for you?”

He shakes his head, his eyes sweeping me. “Nothing. How’s your first day going?”

“Did you come in here to check in on me?”

“Call it neighborly.”

He breaks my train of thought as I quickly grab a cloth to wipe the counter. It’s just after three, so technically I’m finished for the day, but I need to keep my hands busy when I speak to him.

It’s unnerving.

“Um… Good, thanks.” I stumble over my words because he just flashed me a smile that makes my breath lodge in my throat.

“The girls came to visit me at the studio earlier.”

Cora said they would after they called by to see me. She was busy making plans for Hannah to meet the kids here that are her age.

“It’ll be good for her. If you decide on staying, she will know the kids in her class when she starts school,” or so Cora said.

I haven’t been here long enough to know if this is permanent, but I’m grateful to her. Hannah needs kids her own age.

“Did I pass my fear of needles onto my children?”

“The opposite.”

I narrow my eyes on him.

“Hannah may or may not now have a full sleeve of temporary tattoos.”

“What?” I laugh.

“I said no, but…” He looks bewildered. “She does this thing with her eyes.”

I bite my lips together. “It’s her superpower.”

“Superpower? How do you ever say no to her?”

“It’s hard, but I’ve had plenty of practice.”

His eyes soften a fraction as they meet mine.

I pull the apron from my waist and grab my bag, thanking Molly before I leave.

Logan insists on walking me to my car. I don’t object.
