As they passed through town, she could feel her wall slip a little bit, but it was still holding. “My walls are getting harder to hold and I can see a little of Chris’s aura. So, I guess that means the magic is working, but my control is wavering.”

Marshall made a grunting sound, “I’m having the same issue. I had to tell Aiden to leave my office so I would stop hearing his thoughts. I’m nervous about trying any other elements. I don’t want to set the house on fire or start a flood.”

“Oh, I didn’t even think of that. Okay, so testing with just spirit is a good plan.” She sighed as her wall dropped farther.

“Please don’t light my baby on fire.” Chris chuckled.

Marshall snorted, “Dad loves that car more than us. When I was a teenager, he actually bought a truck for me to learn how to drive on. He said it was so we had a second car, but no. He just didn’t want me to scratch the bat mobile.”

Kenzie laughed, “I asked to drive it too and he said no. I’m glad it’s not just me.”

Chris shook his head, “You can’t drive a manual. And Marshall, you drive like a maniac!”

“Oh, you’re one to talk. You drive like you’re in a nascar race!” Marshall exclaimed.

He smirked, “Well, I do have a charger. Gotta drive it like you stole it.”

Kenzie’s chest started to feel tight, at the same time Chris’s aura started to fade. When she tried to take a deep breath to ease the tension in her chest, it felt like her lungs filled with fire. She coughed and the feeling passed, “Marshall, are you feeling this?”

She heard him clear his throat, “Yea I am, but it was only for a minute. It stopped.”

She nodded even though he couldn’t see her, “For me too. Hold on.” She tried to feel her walls, or to see Chris aura. When that didn’t work, she tried calling air. It was the safer element to use inside a car, but nothing happened. “It’s gone. I can’t feel any magic at all.”

“Neither can I. Where are you, Dad?”

“We are a little over 10 miles from you.” He pulled over to the side of the road.

That was farther than she expected. The prophecy, Rhiannon and even Raven had made it seem like they would basically have to be attached at the hip for it to work. But this was a pretty significant distance if they ever needed it.

“Okay great. That should be easy to work with. Well then, are ya’ll hungry? Cause I am starving. Ready to meet up at the Bistro?”

Her stomach growled, “Um… That would definitely be a yes.”

Chris smiled, “We’ll meet you there in a few.”

They heard a door slam and a car start. “Great, see you in a few. Bye!”

They both said goodbye and Chris disconnected the call, then pulled the car back onto the road and made a U- turn to head back to town.

It was a short drive. Neither of them spoke on the way back but it wasn’t awkward. It was companionable with the peaceful sound of the car’s engine lulling her into contentment.

She realized in that moment that she was actually happy, despite all the bad that had happened. She had a dad and a brother who she adored, fantastic new friends, and a great man that she really cared for.

As they pulled into the parking lot, she saw Marshall leaning against a blue pickup truck. Chris might be right about his crazy driving. She was sure they would beat him there. He saw them pull in and waved. Chris parked next to him, and Marshall opened her door for her. She was surrounded by gentlemen, and she loved it.

“So, Chris was right about your driving I see. You drive too fast.” She couldn’t help teasing him a bit.

Marshall smirked, “He may have been right, but it’s only too fast if you get caught.”

Chris snorted, “You have been caught. A few times if I recall.”

“I have only had one speeding ticket since I got my license at sixteen.” He winked at her, “The sheriff around here is an old friend.”

The way he said it had her thinking this friend was a woman, and they were more than friends. At least in the past. She had a feeling he had been a ladies’ man, but knew that if he had, it was over now. Anyone who saw him with Sorcha could see he had eyes only for her.

“He means an old girlfriend. Lucky for him, they parted on good terms otherwise he’d have lost his license by now.” Chris remarked as he started toward the Bistro doors.

As he reached for the door, it swung open for a man to exit. As soon as he stepped outside, both Chris and Marshall stiffened and sniffed the air.
