Kenzie plopped down onto one of the couches, “So, now what?”

Marshall and Sorcha were talking quietly in the corner, and she was doing her best not to listen in.

Aiden sat next to her, “Now we wait for Jordan to tell us they are here. Then we will have to question Corine to figure out her role and what she knows.”

Kenzie’s blood ran a little cold thinking about the last person they questioned.

Aiden placed a hand on her knee, “It won’t be the same as last time, I promise. Let’s just say, the council has a better way to question people that gives a hundred percent results.”

“It’s not torture, right?”

He shook his head and took her hand, “Not exactly. They use magic. You’ll see.”

They’d all been sitting quietly, each with their own thoughts running through their minds, when Marshall abruptly stood. He pulled Sorcha to her feet with him, “They are here. I don’t want them to see you, so go home for now. I will call you and let you know what happens when I can.”

He placed a gentle kiss on her cheek and nudged her toward the door.

Once she was gone, he turned to Raven, “I’m not sure how this is going to go, but I want you in that room with us. William is the only one I fully trust, and we need as many allies in there as possible.”

“Where is Chris?” She hadn’t seen him all day.

Marshall started to head for the door, “He’s bringing the council to my office now.”

Chapter 27.

Kenzie

As they walked into Marshall’s crowded office, Kenzie took a look at each council member.

William’s face was blank, not allowing any emotions to show. He could clean up at a poker table with that stone cold façade. The two witches stood together, both wearing scowls, which didn’t bode well. On the other hand, the two vampires just looked bored to be there, as if they didn’t care what happened here at all.

Kenzie knew better though. They were just as invested in the outcome of this as everyone else.

Finally, she looked at the last council member standing behind the others where she could barely see her. Corine wasn’t moving at all. She looked almost frozen with her eyes opened wide and her mouth forming a grimace. She didn’t blink or move a single muscle.

Kenzie glanced at Marshall but didn’t ask what was wrong with her. Aiden must have realized what she was thinking because a moment later she heard his voice in her head,“The witches must have put a holding spell on her. She probably tried to shift when they confronted her, so they did it to stop her change so she can be questioned.”

“It’s really creepy seeing her like that.”

“Yea, it’s definitely not her best look.”

She coughed quietly to cover her laugh, unable to hold it in. This wasn’t a time for jokes and the people in this room probably wouldn’t appreciate it if she started chuckling. But luckily, no one seemed to notice.

No one spoke, they all just stared back and forth at each other.

Then someone cleared their throat and Chris stood from behind Marshall’s desk. She hadn’t seen him because all the standing people were blocking her view.

The first thing she noticed was that he looked tired. His hair was slightly disheveled, as if he had been running his hands through it all night. There were bags under his eyes, and his mouth was drawn into a tight line.

She had the urge to run up to him and give him a hug and tell him everything would be okay.

But she knew she couldn’t promise him that. So instead, she waited for someone to speak.

William finally stepped forward and took the lead, “Yesterday, Christopher called me with news about the suspected mole. He informed me that information had come to light that Corine has been working with Andre. I have given you all the information he gave me.”

He turned to Marshall, “Shortly after Chris and I spoke, Andre called the council and submitted a formal accusation against you and your pack. He and Tate have both accused you of murdering their pack members without provocation. Now, we already know the circumstances and that it was not murder, but self- defense.”

Colin spoke before William could continue, “However, guilty or not, Andre has the right to defend his actions or those of his pack members. As does Tate. Therefore, we will be meeting with him at midnight, per his request. And you will both have the chance to voice your side of the story.”
