“Hey Aiden, thank you for checking on me. I’m okay, just a little overwhelmed. And I appreciate that, it was nice meeting you too. I’ve recently been told to not run away from whatever this is. So, if you’re up for it, I would like to get to know you better. Also, no pressure.”There, that sounded good. Then she hit “send”.

After saving all three numbers, she sat there waiting to see if Aiden would reply.

Kenzie didn’t really expect a reply any time soon, since she figured he was busy. But then her phone buzzed. Looking down, it was from him. She took another sip of tea and opened the message.

“I would absolutely love that. I know you want to come up tomorrow, and that would be great. The council won’t be here until 5 pm, so if you wanted to come up early, I could show you around.”

The only word she could think of using for how she felt, was giddy. She actually had butterflies flipping around in her stomach. She replied,“That sounds great. How does 10 am sound?”

Was that too early? As she waited for a reply, she chewed on her lip. A nervous habit, but the reply came quickly.

“10 am is perfect. I’ll see you then. Have a good night, Kenz.”

“Good night, Aiden.”

Kenzie wiggled her butt on the couch in excitement, annoying Fiona enough that she looked up at her. She put the phone down and used her free hand to pet her. So apparently, she was open to seeing what this was, because she was way more excited than she thought she would be. She didn’t even feel nervous.

For the rest of the night, she watched cheesy chick flicks on Netflix, then went to bed early. She tried to sleep, but it took a while. There was way too much on her mind and she couldn’t shut it off.

Finally, she drifted off into a fitful sleep. Her dreams were full of wolves, magic, and ghosts.

Kenzie woke up at eight am sharp because that’s when her alarm goes off every morning, but for the life of her, she couldn’t remember why. It was way too early to be awake. Rolling over, she slapped her phone to turn the alarm off, then pulled the blanket over her head.

She’d slept like crap and felt more tired than before she went to bed. She didn’t really remember what she’d dreamed, but knew it was all doom and gloom. As if she needed that in her life right now.

Deciding to sleep for at least another 30 minutes, she rolled over and got comfortable. Then Fiona started meowing.

“Seriously? Fiona! Thirty more minutes!” No such luck of course. She usually got right up and fed her, and apparently, she knew Kenzie was awake. Throwing the blanket back dramatically, she huffed out her frustration and climbed out of the warm cozy bed.

She walked into the kitchen and straight to the coffee maker first. Once it started percolating, she got Fiona’s food to feed her.

Kenzie expected Fiona to come running at the sound of her food hitting the bowl, but she didn’t. She glanced around for her and found the cat staring at the front door.

That’s weird. Maybe there’s a stray outside that caught her attention. Shrugging, she got a cup of coffee then headed to the bathroom to take a shower and get ready for the day.

After blow drying her hair and putting on a touch of makeup, she stood in the closet trying to decide what to wear. This wasn’t really a date, and he was just going to show her around the pack, so nothing fancy.

She decided to dress casual but cute in her favorite short sleeved sundress. It was black with pink roses and came to just above the knees, with a v- neck that was just low enough to be a little teasing. It always made her feel pretty.

After sliding on a pair of black converse, she grabbed her purse and a travel mug of coffee and headed for the door.

As soon as Kenzie opened the door, she could smell it. It was strong. The odor of a werewolf right outside of the house. It was so potent that he must have been there for a while.

She stepped back inside and slammed the door shut again.

She quickly grabbed her phone, pulled up Marshalls number and hit “Dial”. The phone rang several times, then went to voicemail. Same with Christopher and Aiden’s phones when she tried them.

Shoot. She knew they were probably busy getting ready for the council’s arrival but calling them was all she could think to do. What if the wolf was still here? She had no way to protect herself. Kenzie knew a little self-defense because of Uncle Jake. He had insisted she learn, but that wouldn’t help against a werewolf.

Just as she was worrying herself into a panic and considering hiding in the bedroom with Fiona, her phone rang. It was Aiden.

She immediately answered, “Hello gorgeous, sorry I miss-“

Kenzie interrupted him, “Aiden, there was a werewolf at my house. I don’t know if they are still here, but the scent is really strong. I don’t recognize the scent, though that’s normal since I don’t actually know any wolves-“

“Mackenzie! Calm down and tell me what happened. Are you sure you didn’t see anyone?” His voice was calm, like he did this every day.

She took a breath to calm down, “I just smelled it. I don’t know if it’s still here, I closed the door as soon as I caught the scent.”
