Aiden gave her a look that promised way more excitement than singing kids songs, “What I’m thinking is so much better though.”

She studied his face for a minute, and knew whatever it was, was inappropriate, “Don’t tell me.”

As they reached the front door, with Marshall ahead of them, she felt a sudden wave of distress. It took her a second to realize it was coming from Marshall, who was already on the front lawn. Sorcha was walking up to him, but she couldn’t tell what was making him upset.

Then he mind-linked her,“Kenzie, I can hear her thoughts. Oh Goddess, it’s terrible! I don’t want to intrude but I don’t know how to shut it off.”

“Try to build a wall in your mind. That’s what I’ve been trying to do with people’s emotions. Though I’m not very good at it. But you must concentrate. Imagine building a brick wall to keep everything out.”She walked over and put her hand on his arm, hoping to give him some support as he tried.

“Woah,”He looked down at her with surprise,“When you touched me, I didn’t have to concentrate as hard. The wall just went up.”

“Is that a good thing?”Now that she thought about it, her wall felt stronger too. Where before she was getting trickles of emotions from Marshall, Aiden and Sorcha, now they were fully blocked. She couldn’t see their auras either. That gave her an idea,“Let’s try something. I’m going to stop touching you. Tell me how your wall feels when we lose contact.”

She slowly pulled her hand away from his arm and immediately emotions started to trickle back in, and she could see small glimpses of their auras even though she was trying to block them. Then she put her hand back on his arm and they were fully blocked again.

Marshall said,“When you let go, the thoughts rush back into my head. I’m not very good at the wall by myself, but as soon as you touch me it goes up completely.”

“Oh my gosh! Connections!” She accidentally shouted in her excitement, making everyone jump. They had been talking silently up until now so the other two had no idea what was going on.

Marshall just looked at her and lifted one eyebrow as if he was asking what she was talking about, so she told them, “Sorry. So, when we touch our control strengthens and we can put up the walls. When we are not touching it’s harder. Like with the fire last night. Rhiannon said that our magic is connected, that we will need to rely on each other. I think she meant we have to be together. Every time one of us uses magic, the other feels it. It makes me wonder if we’re not together if we can even use it at all. It didn’t show up until I came here, which I thought was weird before but could totally make sense if we have to be together!”

When she stopped rambling, they were all looking at her with varying looks on their faces. Marshall looked like he was considering what she was saying, Aiden looked a little worried, and Sorcha didn’t seem to know what she was talking about. Which, seeing as she didn’t know everything that had happened, didn’t surprise Kenzie.

She shrugged, “It’s just a thought. Makes sense to me though. Anyway, we need to get going. Sorcha, did you need something with us?”

Sorcha blinked like she was coming out of her thoughts, then nodded and glanced at Marshall, “I heard you were going to see a witch?”

Marshall just looked at her for a second before nodding.

“I was wondering if I could come with you?” Sorcha asked quietly while looking down at her feet.

Marshall gently lifted her chin with one finger, forcing Sorcha to meet his eyes, “What do you want with a witch?”

Sorcha turned her head just enough to remove his finger, “I haven’t been sleeping and I wanted to ask her for a tonic, not that it is any of your business.”

Marshall took an aggressive step forward before Aiden placed a firm hand on his shoulder to keep him from getting too close, “It is my business. Messing with witches has consequences. They will always want something in return.”

Sorcha lifted her chin in defiance, “I know that very well. I am willing to pay whatever she asks.”

Marshall snarled, “You can come, but it will be my request. You will not give her anything. Witches do not play games, even with simple requests.”

Aiden stepped closer to Marshall, “Enough Marshall. We need to go.”

It was a subtle reminder and it seemed to knock a bit of sense into her brother, and after a moment, he stepped back, “Fine. Let’s go.”

She watched him pull a small iridescent coin from his pocket and drop it on the ground.

Then Marshall took Aiden and Sorcha’s hands, “Kenzie, take Aiden and Sorcha’s other hands. When I step on the coin, I will say where we are going, and it will pull us in. Our hands will magically bind together so we can’t let go until we reach our destination, okay?”

Sounded simple enough, she took their hands, “Okay, let’s do it.”

Marshall didn’t hesitate as he smashed his heel on the coin and shouted, “RAVENSWOOD”.

Then it felt like they were being wrenched and sucked into a vacuum. It was hard to breathe, and her body felt like it was being twisted in multiple directions. She couldn’t even feel Aiden’s and Sorcha’s hands anymore and couldn’t see anything because her eyes were watering from the wind hitting her in the face.

Finally, after what felt like hours, the wind stopped but then it felt like she was falling. Which apparently, they were because she smashed into something hard.

When she was sure she could move and the world had stopped spinning, she opened her eyes. Then groaned at the brightness as she pushed herself up from the ground.
