Sorcha nodded immediately, “I won’t say anything. I would rather not be involved if I can avoid it.”

“Yea, I won’t say anything either. I’m guessing they are going to want to speak to me about what happened with Dimitri though, right?” Kenzie asked.

Marshall gave her shoulder a light squeeze, “They might. But as far as they know, he attacked you and you defended yourself. Let’s leave it at that. The less details, the better for now.”

Kenzie noticed Raven waving them over from the middle of the training ring, “Okay, sounds good. Looks like Raven is ready for us.”

Marshall sighed, “And it looks like we have an audience.”

Kenzie glanced around to see Chris and Aiden were also standing by the fence. Next to them were the three council members she had met, and she assumed the three that she hadn’t. She asked Marshall to be sure.

He nodded, “Yea. Next to Colin is Sabine, the other witch. The blondes are the Belikova siblings. Nikolai and Arabella. Vampires.”

She studied them as they started to walk over to meet Raven, but paused when Sorcha called out, “I’m going to stay over here if that’s okay?”

Marshall shrugged, “That’s fine, but you don’t have to stay if you don’t want to. This will probably be pretty boring for you.”

Sorcha looked at Kenzie, so Marshall turned to her as well, “Right, so Cassie told us we need to practice throwing punches and blocks. I know the basics, but it’s honestly been years since Uncle Jake showed me. We thought we might see if you could help us if you’re not busy?”

He smiled, “I would love to. We’ll drag Aiden into it too after we work with Raven. Sound good?”

“Yes, that sounds perfect, thank you.” She smiled up at him, again noticing how much he looked like their father. It made her heart ache, thinking about how much they had missed out on.

“Hey, stop. I can see your thoughts, and I feel the same way, but we have all the time in the world now.” He pulled her close and kissed her on the forehead, “Come on, let’s get this over with. We’ll see you in a bit Sorcha.”

Sorcha blushed crimson when he sent her a wink. She gave him a shy smile and nodded, “I’ll be here. Good luck.”

When they joined Raven, she stomped her foot at them, “Took you long enough. Let’s get started. Yesterday we tried to do this the way a witch would, but it didn’t work. You have triggered your powers more than once, but by accident. I think maybe your powers are triggered by your instincts, like breathing or shifting. You don’t think about it, you just do. Make sense?”

They both nodded.

“Okay, good. Marshall, we’ll start with you.” She indicated a pile of wood a few feet from them, “Light it up. Don’t think about it, just do it. Like when you move your feet to take a step or pick up a glass. You know what you want, and you just do it.”

Marshall shook out his arms like he was preparing himself, “Okay. Make fire, just do it.” He looked at the stack of wood and took a few steps closer to it. At first, nothing happened. Then slowly, a small plume of smoke started showing between the logs. He let out a breath, as if he were blowing on the logs, and suddenly the stack of wood burst into flames.

“Woo Hoo! Hot damn, look at that!” Kenzie jumped up and down on her toes, cheering him on.

Marshall chuckled, “Well that was easier. You’re right. It’s more not thinking about it, then thinking about it.”

Raven patted his arm, “Good work. Kenzie, your turn. Use the water in the trough and put the fire out.”

Kenzie stepped next to Marshall, then glanced over to the fence where everyone else was standing. Marshall nudged her hand, “Ignore them. You’ve got this. Just like Raven said, don’t think about it.”

She nodded and looked at the water trough. She told herself over and over to move the water. Come on, she thought, pour out and put the fire out.

It wasn’t working, the water didn’t even ripple.

“Ugh, it’s not working.”

Marshall stepped behind her and placed his hands on her shoulders, “You’re thinking too hard. Only think about how the water feels when you run your hands through it, how the water moves, the little waves it makes. Then stop thinking and just feel it.”

She took a deep breath, then let it out slowly, and did exactly what he said. And again, nothing happened, “Shit.”

“You’ve got this baby. Show me what you can do. Don’t think about anything else.”She heard Aiden’s voice in her mind, and it instantly calmed her. She glanced at him, and he smiled, then he nodded his head in the direction of the trough,“You are strong and powerful, you can do this.”

She could feel his faith in her, his absolute belief that she could do this. It was like a weight lifted off her shoulders. Somehow, he made her feel like she was powerful, like she really could do anything.

She looked back at the trough again and this time, didn’t think at all. She flung her arm out towards the trough as if she could grab the water, then arched it toward the fire like she was throwing it.
