“Well, I actually called her Rhiannon in my surprise. Obviously, I know Rhiannon passed, but I’m telling you she was a spitting image. She didn’t respond at first but then she looked up and saw me. When she looked at me, I asked her who she was and told her she looked just like Rhiannon. The girl seemed surprised. She said Rhiannon was her biological mother’s name.”

Aiden sucked in a sharp breath. Was she really here?

“Marilyn, did you ask her for her name?” Marshall demanded sharply, but Marilyn didn’t seem to notice his tone.

“Of course, I did. She said her name is Mackenzie. Then she said it was nice to meet me, and then she left pretty quickly. I guess I threw her for a loop because she looked mighty skittish when she ran out.”

Aiden looked at Marshall to find him staring right back. Shock was written all over his face, but then a slow smile spread into a grin. Bursting into joyful laughter, he walked over and grabbed Aiden into a hug. He slapped him on the back, then let go and pulled away again.

Giving him a huge smile, Aiden said it out loud, “Looks like you don’t need to go find her anymore. Your sister has come home.”

Chapter 3.

Mackenzie

Kenzie arrived in Silver Lake two days ago and she still hadn’t been able to bring herself to visit the pack. She is staying in her mom’s cabin, which really is not a cabin by normal standards. It was a single level house that is log cabin style on the outside, but on the inside, it was luxury all the way.

Whoever built the house did not spare any expense. It had three large bedrooms, with two and a half bathrooms. The kitchen was huge, with all top of the line appliances and granite counter tops. The walls were seafoam, her mom’s favorite color, with white cabinets and dark hard wood floors. The furniture was all huge, overstuffed couches and lounge chairs, which were perfect for sinking into.

It was amazing, both sleek and cozy at the same time.

So far since she’s been here, all she has done is sit on the front porch in the rocking chair staring at nothing and pacing around the house thinking about what she needed to do now that she was here. Not that she had accomplished anything. Being here made it all real, and that was terrifying.

Her Mom said her father was alive, but he never came looking for her. If he had wanted her, shouldn’t he have found her at some point? Why didn’t he at least write a note or call her mom? He had known Megan for years before, surely, he could have found a way to find her.

So, now that she was here, she was having so many doubts. Maybe he hadn’t wanted her, maybe she was a fool to go looking for him.

Kenzie plopped down into a big tan chair in the living room, and just stared at the black screen of the tv. The drive here was so long, especially with Fiona in the car.

She glanced over to the kitchen where she could see her eating the food Kenzie laid out for her. Fiona was her mom’s little calico cat, and she was having a bit of a rough time without her. So far, she hadn’t let Kenzie pet or hold her at all, and she kept walking around the house meowing.

Kenzie figured she was looking for her mom, and it just about broke her heart all over again. Slapping her hands on the arms of the chair in frustration, she stood back up. She needed something to do, or she was going to go crazy.

When she drove in, she passed through the town with a bunch of little shops and restaurants. She passed by a little movie store called Gracie’s Films. A romantic comedy sounded like a great idea to help her get out of her head.

Kenzie grabbed her purse off the table, then walked to the door and glanced back at Fiona, who was watching her leave, “I will be right back Fiona.”

Of course, she knew talking to a cat was kind of weird, but who else was she going to talk to? The cat didn’t seem to mind.

It only took a few minutes to drive into town. The first thing she saw was the little grocery store, and even though she wasn’t planning to stop, she pulled into the lot.

There was obviously no food in the house since no one had really been there in years, and Kenzie was pretty sure delivery was not a thing here, so she needed to get something to eat. She brought cat food with her, but that was all.

When she walked into the store, she was actually surprised by how big it was. From the outside it looked tiny. Grabbing a cart, she decided to try and make this as quick as possible and headed for the produce aisle.

As she was grabbing some eggs, the last item on her mental list, she realized someone was standing behind her.

She glanced over her shoulder to see an elderly woman standing there watching her. Realizing Kenzie was probably blocking whatever the woman was trying to get, she quickly moved farther down the aisle. Apologizing as she passed, “I’m sorry ma’am. I’ll move out of your way.”

With a wave of her hand, the woman clucked her tongue, “No dear, you’re fine. You just reminded me of someone.”

“Oh. Okay. Well, have a nice day.” Kenzie said with a smile and walked off. She knew it was a small town and she was not ready to have any kind of conversation about who she might look like. She walked quickly to the register to check out, not glancing at anything or anyone else.

There was only one register, but luckily there was just one person in line, who was already being rung up. Kenzie put the plastic bar on the belt, indicating another person’s order, and started placing her groceries behind it. When all her groceries were stacked haphazardly on the belt, she stepped back a bit to wait for the cashier to finish with the other customer.

“Well, hello again dear.” Turning slightly, Kenzie saw the same woman from the egg aisle was behind her.

Kenzie gave her a friendly smile and nodded a hello, hoping she would get the hint that she didn’t want to talk. Unfortunately, she didn’t.
