Aria laughed as she leaned forward to put her mug on the tray. “She would hate that, and then she’d probably do something mean to me.” Getting to her feet, she picked up the tray. “Are you done with your drink?”

Janessa drained the last of her hot chocolate, then set her mug on the tray. “Thank you so much for the treats.”

Aria smiled. “You’re welcome.”

Left alone, Janessa stared into the dying flames in the fireplace. She didn’t want to think about Will, but she couldn’t help but wonder how his date was going. Was he enjoying himself?

And she also wondered about the woman he was with. Would she be a Daphne 2.0? If she was, they wouldn’t see much of Will in the future. That’s how it had worked with Daphne.

It had only been after the first year of dating that Will had started showing up by himself to hang out with Jay and sometimes with the rest of the family. It depressed Janessa to think that once again his presence in her life would be diminished. But on the other hand, it would be easier to deal with him dating again if he wasn’t constantly around.

She rubbed her hand against the ache in her heart. It shouldn’t hurt so much. She’d never imagined that she’d one day actually have the opportunity to date him herself. He’d never shown even the slightest bit of interest in her, so she should have been prepared for this eventuality.

But even if she wasn’t prepared, it shouldn’t matter!

Why was her heart not getting the memo?

She didn’twantto be in a relationship with Will. She didn’t want to be in a relationship withanyone.

Hopefully, this would all pass quickly, and she could continue to have Will’s friendship, even if he was dating someone else.

“It was nice to spend the evening with you, Emily,” Jackson said. “Maybe we can meet up again.”

Emily smiled at Jackson, making Will think that perhaps Jackson had a real chance with the woman. If that was the case, Will was happy for the guy. Maybe this would be the one that worked out for Jackson.

He was glad he hadn’t come into the evening with any sort of expectations for his own date. The woman had been nice enough—much like Emily—but Will wasn’t interested in a second date with her. And thankfully, he didn’t think she was either.

“I’ll give you a call, and we can set something up,” Emily said.

Jackson seemed to feel it was a genuine response, so Will hoped it wasn’t just a brush off. After walking the ladies to their car, they headed to where Jackson had parked earlier.

“They were both really great,” Jackson said. “Don’t you think?”

“They were,” Will agreed.

Jackson pulled out of the parking lot. “So you’d be interested in going on another date with us?”

“Nope. Sorry, but this was just a onetime thing.”

“Hang on a second. I thought you said she was nice.”

“She was, but I have no interest in actually dating her.”

Jackson slowed at a stoplight, then glanced over at him. “Still hung up on Daphne, huh?”

“No, but that doesn’t mean I want to go out with her again.”

“I just hope that Emily doesn’t want us to keep double dating because if you won’t come along, I’m not sure who will.”

“You could ask Wade again.”

Jackson scoffed. “Are you serious right now?”

“I suppose not,” Will said with a laugh.

“Wade has no interest in dating, let alone going on a double date with me.”
