He glanced over at her and decided it was worth the risk because she was right. He did need to get everything off his chest, and she was the person he was most comfortable talking to.

Hopefully, he wouldn’t come to regret that decision.

CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

Kayleigh gave Andrea a brief smile as she walked past the woman’s desk and headed for her office. It was a relief to step inside and retreat behind her desk.

Her day was nearly over, but she wasn’t sure if she was going to go home, or if she’d just continue to work. That had become her habit over the past couple of months. She worked late, went home, ate a quick dinner, then did whatever she needed to do to prepare for the next day and went to bed.

The desire to cook herself a nice dinner at the end of a busy day had lost its appeal. The things she’d used to do to disconnect herself from work weren’t necessary anymore because she didn’twantto be disconnected. Work was the only thing that helped her ignore the turmoil in her heart.

However, being at work wasn’t easy either, as the resort held a lot of memories of Hudson and the time they’d spent together. But since she had to be there for her job, she’d just delved into work and tried to push everything else aside while she was there.

The one place she hadn’t spent any time at was the Steakhouse. That place really had too many memories for her. If she wanted to eat something from there, she just had it delivered to her office.

The continuing heartache she felt was particularly infuriating because she was the one who had made the decisions that caused it.

She should have kept her distance from Hudson. Treated him as a co-worker and nothing more. And even though she’d had a crush on him, she should have made sure it hadn’t grown into anything more.

But noooo…

She’d let her feelings lead her into a situation that was destined for heartache. She’d known that andstilllet it happen.

And though she’d been trying her best to distract herself and not think about the man, it hadn’t really worked. Not a day passed without something triggering a memory. Honestly, some days, not even an hour passed without a thought of Hudson.

When her phone rang, she picked it up and sighed when she saw Janessa’s name on the screen. Payback was not very fun when she was on the receiving end.

Months ago, she’d gone to try to talk some sense into Janessa when she’d broken up with Will and retreated from the world. Now that Kayleigh was dealing with her own heartache, Janessa was getting involved.

Kayleigh had tried to get Janessa out of her room when she’d retreated from the world, and now Janessa was trying to pry Kayleigh away from her desk.

“What do you want?” Kayleigh said by way of a greeting.

“Is that any way to talk to your favorite sister?”

“Hmmm.” Kayleigh put the phone on speakerphone and set it on the desk so she could continue to work. “I would never admit to that.”

“That’s okay,” Janessa assured her. “We both know how you really feel about me.”

“Now that that’s settled, what do you want?”

“Are you still at work?”

Kayleigh sighed. “I am. Busy day today.”

“Every day is a busy day for you lately.”

“That’s the life of a manager.”

“You need to come for pizza tonight,” Janessa said. “You haven’t been here for weeks and weeks.”

“I’ve been—”

“Busy. Yes, I know. But we both know it’s more than that. Come and spend time with us.”

“I’m not up for an interrogation or a lecture. And you all never pass up a chance to do both.”

“Neither do you.”
